CHINA E-LOBBY UPDATE: JUNE 4, 2002 TOP STORY: ANNIVERSARY OF TIANANMEN SQUARE MASSACRE PASSES QUIETLY SECURITY TIGHT AT WORLD CUP MATCH, IN WHICH COSTA RICA BEATS PRC 2-0 Communist China insisted on tight security at its first ever World Cup match to prevent any protests honoring the thousands murdered in Tiananmen Square 13 years ago today by the Communist military (CNN) as a candle-light vigil in Hong Kong was held for those who died (BBC). The soccer match went by without incident; Costa Rica beat the so-called People�s Republic of China 2-0. Meanwhile, the editors of the Washington Post used their Monday lead editorial to remind its readers about Tiananmen Square and its aftermath, and issued a clarion call in support of anti-Communist, pro-democracy activists in Communist China. Roughly 1 million protestors in Tiananmen Square called for democracy and freedom, until the Communist military opened fire on June 4, 1989. NEWS ON COMMUNIST CHINA AND THE TERRORIST WAR STASH OF PRC MISSILES FOUND IN AFGHANISTAN American military in Afghanistan found yet another stash of Communist Chinese weaponry in an abandoned al Qaeda compound in southeastern Afghanistan last week. The military found 30 NH-5s, the PRC version of the Russian SA-7 surface-to-air missiles. Just recently, the FBI warned that surface-to-air missiles may have been smuggled into the U.S. by terrorists. Report: Bill Gertz, Washington Times COMMUNIST CHINA TRIES TO PLAY PEACEMAKER FOR PAKISTAN ON KASHMIR As a summit of Asian leaders began Monday, Communist China �joined diplomatic efforts to ease tensions� (CNN) in the volatile Kashmir region. The area of Kashmir controlled by India has been subject to numerous attacks from terrorists in northern Kashmir, controlled by long-time PRC ally Pakistan. JIANG PROT�G� LANDS TOP SPOT ON TAIWAN AFFAIRS GROUP Meanwhile, Zeng Qinghong, prot�g� to Communist President Jiang Zemin, has been given the head position on the Leading Group on Taiwan Affairs. RUSSIAN DEFENSE MINISTER VISITS COMMUNIST CHINA Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov was in Beijing this weekend for talks with leaders of Russia�s biggest weapons customer (BBC). Despite the history of big weapons sales � Russia is also Communist China�s �most important supplier of sophisticated weapons� (CNN�s Willy Wo-Lap Lam) � the PRC is panicking over Russia�s recent movement toward the United States in recent months. NEW KYRGYZSTAN PM PICKED, ANTI-PRC OPPOSITION NOT SATISFIED Nikolai Tanayev is the new Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan after the government resigned over the shooting deaths of five protestors (see last update). The opposition � whose criticisms of the government focus around its arrest of its leader Azimbek Beknazarov and a treaty handing 90,000 hectares of land to Communist China � is demanding that all involved in the shootings be �punished� (BBC). FOREIGN TAX BREAKS TO BE PHASED OUT Communist China is using the parts of the World Trade Organization agreements that it likes the most and implementing them first. The BBC reports that the PRC will use the WTO accords to scrap tax breaks for the foreign investment which had spurred the flood of investments into Communist China recently. REPUBLIC OF CHINA (TAIWAN) NEWS HOPE FOR PROGRESS IN CROSS-STRAIT TALKS FADING After Communist China and Taiwan appeared to be moving toward a �breakthrough� in talks from �air crash diplomacy� (CNN�s Willy Wo-Lap Lam, last update), Communist China is drifting back to its hard-line stance, and some are wondering if their warm words were anything more than �propaganda.� ROC President Chen is also hesitant to move, for fear that those softer on the PRC seize the momentum. There�s still time to contact the President and tell him not to appoint pro-PRC Doug Paal as de facto ambassador to Taiwan. No news was reported from Hong Kong or Tibet this week. EAST TURKESTAN (�XINJIANG�) NEWS PRC ORDERS TOP UNIVERSITY IN REGION TO STOP TEACHING IN UIGHUR LANGUAGE In yet another blow to the beleaguered Uighur people of East Turkestan, Communist China order the top university in the region, named after the PRC�s name for the province � Xinjiang � to stop teaching courses in the language of the Uighurs (BBC). Communist repression of the Uighurs over the past 50 years have fueled a movement for independence, which East Turkestan had briefly during World War II.
