CHINA E-LOBBY UPDATE: APRIL 2, 2003 Tell Gay Hartwell Sills of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. to kill the Global Crossing sale to Hutchison Whampoa (see American-Related News and the last Update for more on this). TOP STORY: MORE SIGNS OF GROWING AGGRESSIVENESS IN COMMUNIST CHINA MILITARY IS USING IRAQ WAR TO JUSTIFY MORE FUNDING; MAO MAKING A COMEBACK The two forces making the most of the U.S.-Baathist Iraq war in Communist China are the legacy of Mao Zedong and the Communist military he championed, according to Willy Wo-Lap Lam, CNN. Lam notes that Maos methods of warfare which highlighted irregular forces are seen in the so-called Peoples Republic (still opposed to the U.S. military action) as being quite helpful to Saddam Hussein. More importantly, according to Lam, Mao has also been celebrated the past fortnight for two reasons: his championship of high-tech weapons and his defiance of American supremacy. Naturally, the Communist military is milking this for all its worth, and Hu Jintao is facing formidable pressure to adopt tougher tactics against the U.S. OTHER NEWS ON COMMUNIST CHINA, EAST TURKESTAN, AND THE TERRORIST WAR COMMUNIST SHUT DOWN ANTI-WAR PROTEST Whatever opinion one has about the war against Baathist Iraq, at least one can state it publicly, even if it defies the Administration. Once again, Communist China revealed how different it is by forcing protestors to keep their number below forty and their time to five minutes that was for a protest that supported the Communist opposition to the war. Report: Willy Wo-Lap Lam, CNN Why are the Communists so nervous? One professor has this answer: If people go out on the streets, it could turn into some other kind of demonstration (BBC). Of course, in other kinds of demonstrations the PRC, not the U.S., could be the target of protestors outrage. Check out these stories and more on the Communist China and the Terrorist War page. NORTH KOREA NEWS PRC BLOCKING UN SECURITY COUNCIL STATEMENT ON NK, BUT MAY BE TURNING A SCREW Communist China is holding up a Security Council statement calling on Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear ambitions (Washington Times) until its Stalinist ally responds to the U.S. offer for multilateral talks on the subject. Also reporting: Newsmax That said, the Baltimore Sun reported that Communist China might be leaning on its ally to stop its antics and rhetoric, although the story is based on hearsay and an oil pipeline shutdown publicly deemed a technical problem. Any optimism on this front should be cautious, at best. For the latest on Communist Chinas Stalinist ally, sign up for Mondays North Korea Report. OTHER AMERICAN-RELATED NEWS PERLE QUITS GLOBAL CROSSING, KISSINGER FIRM ON GC PAYROLL Richard Perle, formerly Chairman of the Presidents Defense Policy Board, resigned his retainer from Global Crossing. Perle had agreed to help Global Crossing win approval from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. for the firms sale to Hutchison Whampoa, owned by Communist sympathizer Li Ka-shing (see 3/6/02, 8/14/02, 3/12, and last Updates). Reports: Washington Post 3/28, New York Post Meanwhile, Kissinger-McLarty Associates, a firm founded by the former Secretary of State, is on the Global Crossing payroll for $30,000 a month, and will pocket an extra $200,000 success fee (Washington Post 3/29) if its sale to Hutchison is approved. The McLarty is Mack McLarty former chief of staff to then-President Bill Clinton. U.S. ALLOWING DIPLOMATS TO LEAVE GUANGDONG, HONG KONG OVER SARS Some American diplomats in Guangdong province and Hong Kong can take free flights home (New York Post) courtesy of the U.S. government. The flights are offered because of the deadly disease known as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), a disease whose lethality was greatly enhanced by the Communists continuing secretiveness on the home of its first outbreak Guangdong province. For more on SARS, see Other Mainland News, Republic of China (Taiwan) News, and Hong Kong News. HUMAN RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS NEWS COMMUNIST CHINAS RECORD HIT BY STATE DEPARTMENT The U.S. State Department released its annual report on human rights worldwide, and once again Communist China was cited for instances of extrajudicial killings, torture and mistreatment of prisoners, forced confessions, arbitrary arrest and detention, lengthy incommunicado detention, and denial of due process (CNN). The report also cited the hideous one child policy. The report noted, citizens still were required to apply for government permission before having a child, and the government continued to restrict the number of births (Cybercast News). This occurred even in PRC areas involved with the United Nations Population Fund, despite its insistence to the contrary. Such UNFPA complicity in one child was the main reason it lost U.S. funds last year (see 07/24/02 Update). OTHER MAINLAND NEWS PRC FINALLY LETS WHO INTO GUANGDONG; WHO WARNS AGAINST GUANGDONG TRAVEL Communist Chinas secretive behavior on SARS they kept quiet about the disease for at lest four months has not abated (see 3/19 and last Updates). The Communists allowed the World Health Organization (WHO) into Guangdong province where the disease began just this morning, months after it was first discovered. Reports: BBC 4/2-1 The Communists would not admit the presence of SARS until last week, and even today, they insist the disease has gradually been brought under effective control, despite the fact that it has now spread as far north as Beijing and as far west as Sichuan province. The disease has killed over 40 in the PRC (over 1,000 have been infected), and thats just the deaths to which the PRC will admit. Over 70 have died worldwide from SARS. The disease is paralyzing Hong Kong (see Hong Kong News), which is now under a growing quarantine (CNN 4/1). The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a warning against traveling to Hong Kong and Guangdong (CNN 4/2, BBC 4/2-2). See also Republic of China (Taiwan) News for more on the effects of PRC secretiveness on SARS. SARS NIXES ROLLING STONES TOUR Meanwhile, the Rolling Stones tour of Communist China (see 3/12 Update) has been completely cancelled due to SARS. The band said it would try to reschedule the concerts. Report: BBC INTERNATIONAL NEWS BRILLIANCE CHINA IN JOINT CAR VENTURE WITH BMW AS FOUNDER STILL HIDES Brilliance China established a joint venture with BMW to produce tens of thousands of cars in Communist China. Brilliance, it should be noted, is the formerly private firm that came under control of Liaoning province after the founder, Yang Rong, escaped from the PRC. The thoroughly corrupt Communists accused Yang of tax evasion (see 10/2/02, 10/23/02 and 11/13/02 Updates). Report: BBC REPUBLIC OF CHINA (TAIWAN) NEWS TRAVEL TIES WITH MAINLAND AT RISK DUE TO COMMUNIST SILENCE ON SARS The ROC government is considering suspending its limited links with China (BBC) as a result of the Communists lack of action and candor on SARS (see Other Mainland News). President Chen Shui-bian accused the PRC and rightly so of concealing the extent of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and so hastening its spread. SARS has killed at least six Taiwanese (Cybercast News). HONG KONG NEWS CITY UNDER GROWING QUARANTINE DUE TO SARS The former British colony is dealing with the latest consequence of one country, two systems PRC silence on SARS (see Other Mainland News) that has led to a possible epidemic in the city. As of this hour, over 600 are infected, schools are closed, and an entire apartment block is under quarantine. Reports: CNN, Washington Post: 3/28 and 3/31 , BBC, New York Post TIBET NEWS COMMUNISTS EXILE SINGING NUN NGAWANG SANGDROL Tibetan nun Ngawang Sangdrol, age 26, is now in exile in the United States after spending more than half her life in PRC prisons for her opposition to Communist rule over her homeland.
