Bronze Award Winners
These are songs that have received this site's Bronze Award. This is the lowest award level. While there have definitely been better video game songs, the composers of each and every song here are genuinely talented. This doesn't mean that the songs don't sound cool, either; only that they tend to lose their appeal faster than those in the other two categories. Listen to these songs as well as the Gold and Silver ones; people have different tastes in game music and a song that I consider to be bronze level might be your idea of gold level.

- Zelda- Fairy Fountain: This one can be heard in several Zelda games. It is placed in the lowest category largely because it's so short (about 24 seconds until repeat.) Length notwithstanding, this is an elegant little sonata (I mean 'sonata' in the loosest sense, not according to the strict musical definition.) You generally don't spend much time in fairy fountains anyway, so the length is no loss for the gamer.
- Super Mario RPG- Seaside Town: The Seaside Town theme emerges as one of the better tracks in this quirky little 1995 collaboration between Nintendo and Square (oddly enough, it was also Square's last major US release on a Nintendo system.) Each town had its own music (this pattern is echoed in the totally unrelated Namco Japanese game Tales of Phantasia.) The Seaside Town theme is somewhat of a cross between hornpipe and tavern music. This one is also a bit short.
- Super Metroid- Lower Norfair: I originally got this one from Video Gamer X's game music page, having never heard the tune before. Like most Metroid music (so I'm told), this is a very minimalist piece. It feels like something is following you. You can't see it, but you know it's there. Not bad at all.
- Chrono Trigger- Frog (SPC): Another good character theme from Chrono Trigger, this one belongs to my second-favorite playable character (next to Magus), Frog. Frog is a character from the game's medieval era, and his noble sense of chivalry is reflected in his theme. Note that this version has an added introduction that is not present in the game.
- Demon's Crest- Level 1: This tune doesn't come from a game that everyone's heard of, but it's still a nice piece of music. A very Gothic-sounding piece for organs.
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2- Chemical Plant: No one submitted this piece, or even the game name, and it isn't one of my personal favorites. It just happens that I was browsing the Genesis section at the Videogame Music Archive (in the hope of increasing this site's system diversity), and I noticed that the VGMA carried twelve different versions of this theme. That's easily more than any other song I've seen. I've noticed that songs which get sequenced (and remixed) a lot are generally pretty good songs, so I gave it a listen and found that it was a jazzy piece with 'tude. So I interpreted the large number of versions as a vote of confidence and put it on the site. This tune isn't half bad, really.
- Y's I- Palace of Salmon: This interesting piece comes from Y's I. Like most videogame music, I can't really place it in a specific genre, but that doesn't mean it's not good. Give it a listen; you'll probably like it.
- Xenogears- Emotion: The esoteric PSX RPG had a reasonably acclaimed soundtrack, and "Emotion" is one of the better songs. The same thing I said about "Chrono Trigger" (the song) regarding optimism applies here as well, though to a lesser degree. Funny, you'd expect a song titled "Emotion" to be sad...
- Final Fantasy V- Battle with Gilgamesh (SPC): This one's interesting. In addition to regular battle, boss battle, fierce battle, and final battle themes, Final Fantasy V has an extra battle theme for Gilgamesh, which isn't so odd considering that you fight him quite often in the second half of the game. This piece is fast-paced and exciting, and sounds sort of like what you'd get if you mixed big band and jazz. I used to like this one a lot, but it's lost a lot of its appeal to me. You might like it, though.
- Final Fantasy VI- Save Them!: This one is actually sort of analogous to FFV's Gilgamesh theme, except it isn't used for flat-out battles. Here's another Uematsu march, considerably faster than "Castle Baron". It's used for very desperate situations. Sounds almost like something you'd hear in a parade.
- Final Fantasy VI- Mog (SPC): Another FF6 theme. This one goes with Mog, the Moogle who appears on the box cover. Sort of quirky, but I guess that's to be expected from such a mercurial character.
- Final Fantasy- Chocobo Theme: This one's in all the FF games that have Chocobos, and is played when you're riding a Chocobo (duh.) It's very bouncy and exuberant.
