The Chilliwack Spinners & Weavers guild was founded in the Fall of 1974 by Mildred Renz, with the aim of sharing knowledge and bringing together people who enjoyed the old arts of spinning and weaving. Since that time, the Guild has participated in numerous community events, held workshops and participated in regional and national conferences.
To foster the arts and craft of spinning and weaving in the community, to help and stimulate each other and to encourage beginners.
The Guild Room is located in the basement of the Community Arts Center with access by the lower door on Henderson Ave. The room houses 4 large floor looms, several table looms, spinning wheels and a library for members to use. The room is open each Thursday at 10:00a.m. to noon for members to gather and work on various projects.
The guild runs from September to June. Meetings are held at the Chilliwack Community Arts Center on the third Thursday at 7:00 pm
The first Thursday of each month is an informal meeting at the Arts Center. This is a time when members meet and setup study groups, help with problems members are having or just to socialize. The guild room is open from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.
A large collection of books, journals, videos and newsletters are available for members to sign out and use at no charge.
Many smaller items such as carders, frame looms, spinning wheels and warping boards are housed in the storeroom and maybe be rented for a specified time to active guild members.
A newsletter is published bi-monthly which contains news of community and area events in which members participated, helpful hints, news and information, upcoming events and a classified section.
Guild members participate in the Chilliwack Exhibition in August and the Chilliwack Community Arts Center' Christmas Craft Market held in Chilliwack each November. Demonstrations are also held at local malls, schools, and community group meetings;
The guild averages 40 members and has beginners and experts in all facets of spinning, weaving, knitting, felting and dyeing.
