I am a beautiful, Black, full-figured woman and while I have always accepted my Blackness, my beauty and size are characteristics I have been slow in accepting. Now that we are "in vogue", I have some thoughts.
What gave you the right to say that I am not beautiful? I've never seen the guidelines on beauty, so why don't you show me? Why are larger women only worshipped in the dark, like closet chicken thigh lovers? What basis do you have for saying that I don't love my body?

I always:
Outer beauty is definitely a reflection of inner beauty. I'll share with you how I work the four points I mentioned above!

My favorite scents are citrus, musk and oriental fragrances. I don't like anything heavy; I like to leave just a hint of scent in my wake.

My choices:

I try to take care of my body both inside and out. One way that I like to treat myself is by having a manicure, pedicure and a spa treatment. Here in Atlanta there is a great spa called Key Lime Pie. If you are ever in this area, you should definitely check them out. I am already planning my next visit!

When I am in a situation that is potentially volatile, I try to take a deep breath before going off half cocked. I'll admit that there have been times when I read folks the riot act, but never undeservedly. Being a woman is a hard job - but somebody's gotta do it!

And now a word for all of my sistas who have been contemplating cutting their hair off: GO! I didn't cut my hair off for any particular social reason, however I have noticed that I feel proud to be able to wear my hair in a way that is flattering to my face and projects the self-assurance that I feel.

Now don't get me wrong - not having to carry an umbrella has its advantages - but I am here to tell you that if you have always wanted to cut your hair just remember - it is YOUR hair, your body and you can do whatever you like.

Think your man will trip like a broke leg midget if you cut it? A couple of things to consider:

  1. if he's telling you how to dress and what to do with your hair you might want to have his name legally changed to "Daddy"; and
  2. trust me on this - there are many, many, many men who find a shorn head to be sexy as hell!
Just think how much we love a man's smooth dome or fresh faded cut. You haven't lived until you have let a man run his hand across your short, short hair. There oughta be a law!!

So here's the deal. If you want to cut your hair, cut it but sistas PLEASE keep it shaped up often. Even Angela Davis has started wearing cornrows 'cause she knew her Afro was way too damn big!! So flaunt that sexy neck of yours, floss the curve of your royal round head and you'll have to fight the men - and your man - off with a stick!
