The Hand of God
![]() |
By Richard Miller
The sun rose gently, tinting the sky with its yellow flames
It lifted toward its zenith on a slow trip that brings it down
And up again in the morning
The warm sun touched my skin
It let me know that God was there
The night was done
The day dawned with a gentle breeze
Again I felt the hand of God
He softly pressed it into my heart
Lifting it to heaven
I stood in the midst of the rubble
I wondered how something like this could happen
To such delightful people
They laughed
They smiled
They offered me a cup of coffee
Their home was gone
It had blown away yesterday
The hand of God
Had lifted it from where man could place it
The rain cut into my skin like many pricks of needles
The wind blew me back
Still I pressed forward
There was someone in need
Hot food and companionship
I could provide this with my friends
We carried the kitchen
The water
The food
The people came
One
Two
Ten
Twenty
We fed thousands
Flames lit up the sky
The night would not be the same
Heat pierced my thick coat
It caused me to sweat
In the twenty degree weather
Water on my back froze in rivulets
Running down into my boots
I watched the family huddle
Beside the bright red truck
Wrapped in blankets for comfort
I felt the hand of God
He led me through the fire
I felt the hand of God
He took my hand
And led me to them
He carried me to them
He gave me the strength to go
I could not go without him
Today I felt the hand of God
He reached inside my heart
And lifted it up to heaven
He reminded me
There is a place
A home that will never fall
It will not be burned
It cannot be blown over
He will bring me there someday
I will walk with him down golden streets
He will hold my hand
As a father
Holds the hand of his child
For I am a child of his
The Hand of God II
Tonight I felt the hand of God
He touched my heart with you
You smiled
And when you did I knew
The light of God was there
He led me through the fires of life
Without a single burn
He led me through the floods
And let me live to learn
Again I feel the hand of God
I feel his hand in you
I know that he will keep you safe
He takes care of his own
And you are a child of his
Today I felt the hand of God
I watched the buildings fall
He held me in his arms today
And though I was afraid
I knew that life was mine to live
Whatever others do
I know that when we look at life
The world can get us down
I know that if we do not dare
We cannot reach the sky
I know that if we look to God
We cannot help but fly
He will always hold our hand
As a father
Holds the hand of his child
