QUILTING: A TOOL FOR TEACHING TOLERANCE
CREATE A QUILT IN YOUR CLASSROOM and add it to the stack of children’s
quilts accompanying the Cover Them Exhibit at the Holocaust Museum
Houston (HMH). The quilt will go to a child in need. Teachers may
request a lesson plan provided by the museum to help them lead a
discussion about the children who are suffering in our world today and
how they can help.
We would hope that your students could visit the HMH and see the show.
Their names as donors will be inscribed in a book accompanying the
exhibit. If they are unable to come the quilt could be mailed to the
museum or arrangements made for it to be picked up.
By sending information about the project to the students’ homes you
might be surprised at the support you’ll get. There are lots of
quilters and sewers out there.
What better way to start the school year than by allowing your students
to look around and be aware of how they can make a difference in the
life of a child. For specific information and how this project can be tied to the
curriculum contact Beryl Myers or Amy Duke.
Ginny Eckley taught a high school art class how to paint on fabric
using resist and she made 4 quilts from the students' work.
