<<   Lesson 4 E 2   >>
2 Timothy 3:16
All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness..
Remember what Jesus said to Nicodemus?  "If I tell you earthly things and you do not understand them, how can you understand if I tell you heavenly things?" So let me ask you the same question as an earthly question and see if that helps you understand
Feeding on God's Word in the spiritual world is the same as feeding on food in the natural world.  You know that you need food for your body to be healthy and strong and to have energy.  It is no different at all in your spiritual life.  Jesus said, "I am the bread of life..." It is Him and His Word that are food and drink to us.
Why would you not want to eat?  I can think of a few reasons: You may be sick.  People who are sick have no desire to eat.  Even the thought of food, even things that they really love, can be nauseating to them.
The Importance of Knowing The Bible
From the above verse we can see the importance of studying God's Word. There are four reason why we need it:

1.  We need it for teaching.  God's spiritual ways and our natural ways are not the same. We need to be taught the right way to live.  We can only get that teaching from God, and only through His Word.

2. We need to study the Bible for reproof.  That's discipline.  When we do what is wrong we need to be rebuked so that we won't do it again.  Many people don't like to be told off but we need it, and God's Word does it.

3.  When we are wrong we need to be corrected.   Not only do we need to be reproved and told that something is wrong and why it is wrong but God in His love also tells us what we need to do and how to get back on the right road.

4.  God's Word will give us training in righteousness.  Training is different from teaching.  You don't teach a dog, you train it.  You don't "potty teach" a child, you "potty train".  Training has to do with being there with a person or a pet when they do something, over and over until it becomes natural for them. That is where God's Word is so powerful.  It guides us through life's circumstances over and over until righteousness becomes a natural thing for us.
John 6:31-58
I've been born again and I have eternal life, Why do I need to study the Bible?
I've been born and I have life, Why do I need to eat my food?
It is very natural to want to eat, we like it!  Most young people don't have to be called too many times before they show up at the dinner table. There's normally something wrong when we don't feel like eating.  As a Christian if you have no desire to feed on God's Word it could be a symptom of something seriously wrong.
Of course, dead people don't eat either.  Sometimes when a Christian has absolutely no desire at all for the Word of God I wonder whether or not they have really accepted the idea of Christ as their Lord and Master.
Sometimes people go on diets.  They get overweight because they are eating too much of the wrong things.  Some Christians only like to study in God's Word things that they really like and they ignore the things that they really need. They love to read about the love of God and how wonderful He is. but they don't like to hear about His discipline.  They get spiritually fat and need to cut out the deserts and start eating some meat and potatoes.
Now babies eat, and they eat a lot but they can't eat hard food like meat.  They don't even have teeth at first so they need to take it easy. If you are a new Christian heavy doctrine can be upsetting to your system so start out with some good wholesome milk and add the stew when you get a little further along.
People don't eat when they get busy and become obsessed with other things.  They just don't have time to eat.  They need to make time or else they won't be healthy or be able to do the things they want to do.  Sometime it takes a little discipline to make time for ourselves to eat.   If that is the only way that you can get some time in God's Word then do it because you need it.

I Like to eat!  I know that I should have just as much hunger for God's Word as I do for food.  When I don't I need to check to find out what is wrong in my spiritual life.
