We need to look at the whole chapter of I John 1 not just at verse 9.  Beginning at I john 1:5  just after the introduction.  John says, And this is the message that we have heard from Him and announce to you that God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all.  Darkness is a picture of evil and there is no evil in God. If we would walk with Him there needs to be no evil in us. For us to say that we are walking in fellowship with God and yet have evil in us we are lying to ourselves and not walking in light.  We must walk in the light AS HE IS IN THE LIGHT, that is without darkness.

Now, what does this mean?  The word walk has to do with where our theology meets with the way we live.  We can believe something but if it doesnt convert into our lives it isnt any good.  Living what you believe is what we call our walk. To use a contemporary phrase it is where the rubber meets the road.

To get rid of guilt in your life you need to come into the light.  When you come to Jesus Christ in prayer to confess your sins it is like walking into a great big spotlight.  It is so bright there is absolutely no darkness there.  Every part of your life shows up and every speck of dirt is revealed.  God shows us what we really are.  Without this there will never be any cleansing.  David said it this way, In Psalm 139:23, Search me O God, and know my thoughts, try me and know my ways, and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Most of the time we just want God to forgive us for one sin that is bothering us.  Jesus wants to change our whole life and we shrink away from that.  But without that searching God will just let us go on in sin until things get worse then maybe we will come to Him for cleansing.
