Monte Vista Hotel

Some of the guests of the old hotel included Bing Crosby, Jane Russell, Gary Cooper, Spencer Tracy and many others. One of the ghosts residing here is that of a phantom bellboy who knocks on doors and then vanishes. This annoying phantom has been experienced by dozens of guests over the years and he is joined by the ghost of a woman who has been seen outside of the Zane Grey suite and another man who endlessly paces in one of the rooms. He is often reported coughing and clearing his throat. Another ghost, that of a former bank robber, is said to haunt the saloon. The story goes that in 1970, three men robbed a nearby bank and then stopped into the lounge for a celebration drink - even though one of the men had been shot during their escape. Regardless, the new owners allowed Abby and her husband to stay on in the hotel for no charge. She died in 1921 and her ghost, along with that of her cat, began to be seen after World War II. The stories say that Abby died of starvation, along with Noble, after her husband deserted her. She has been haunting the place ever since.
Crescent Hotel
75 Prospect Ave , Eureka Springs, AK (501) 253-9766 - A room in this 78-year-old resort hotel is haunted by the ghost of Michael, an Irish stonemason who worked on the hotel in 1885. The man fell from the roof and died in the second floor area which since became Room 218. Now he plays tricks with the lights and TV, or pounds loudly from inside the thick walls in the room. But there are other spirits here as well. The ghost of a nurse dressed in white has been reported on the third floor. Another ghost here is a gentleman in Victorian clothing who haunts the lobby. He has been spotted at the bottom of the stairway and sitting at the lobby bar. Other apparitions have been sighted in Room 202 and Room 424. Built in the early 1800s, the resort hotel was used as a college in the 1920s and became a somewhat controversial hospital/health resort in the late 1930s. The confused ghost of Doctor Baker, the charlatan who ran the hospital in the 1930s, has been seen in the old Recreation Room and at the foot of the first floor stairway.
Hotel Del Coronado
1500 Orange Ave, Coronado, CA (619) 435-6611 - The Hotel Coronado, located just outside San Diego, has a ghostly tale of unrequited love. In 1892, Kate Morgan checked into Room 3502 to meet her estranged husband for the Thanksgiving holidays. He never arrived. A few days later, Kate's body was found on the hotel steps leading out to the ocean. Ever since that time, workers and guests have been puzzled by odd noises, spirited breezes, strange faces and the ghostly figure of a young lady wearing a black lace dress. Room 3502 has since been described as a "classic haunting." Parapsychologists, using scientific methods, has found 37 abnormalities in one day.
Groveland Hotel
18767 Main St, Groveland, CA (209) 962-4000 - The Groveland Hotel of California is has a live-in spirit named Lyle. He once worked in a now defunct mine in the creek that runs alongside the hotel, and he lived in The Groveland Hotel until he died in his room in 1927. Being a recluse, he wasn't missed for a few days. If you stay in his room, you may find that Lyle dislikes women's cosmetics on his dresser. He moves them to the sink nearby. Most guests return to their rooms to note the movement. One guest watched as her new makeup just hopped over the back and landed on the floor! Lyle also likes to play with the lights, move items on desks in the office, and turn on the water in the shower. He can even somehow make it so a key temporarily does not work in a lock. The Charlotte Hotel across the street was built and operated by a woman named Charlotte DeFerrari. It is rumored that Lyle and Charlotte were once an item. When he seems to disappear for a while from the hotel, some suspect they may be together.
Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel
7000 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, CA (323) 466-7000 - Some ghosts are more famous in death and others were more famous when they are alive. We may never know which is better in the end. The hotel, named after President Theodore Roosevelt, opened on May 15, 1927. It quickly became the center of Hollywood, located across from the Chinese Theater. The first Academy Awards ceremony (then called the Merit awards) was held in the Blossom Room in 1929 and the Academy held their meetings here from 1927 to 1935. Montgomery Clift stayed at the Roosevelt for three months during the making of "From Here To Eternity" and some say his ghost stayed here for eternity. On windy nights, some may hear his bugle playing in the hallway or his room 928. Marilyn Monroe lived on and off in Cabana 246, posing for her first ad on the diving board of the swimming pool. Her own mirror is still there, only now located in the lobby. Some have seen her reflection still gazing back from this mirror.
Queen Mary Hotel
1126 Queens Hwy, Long Beach, CA (310) 435-3511 - This ocean liner, now permanently docked at the Port of Long Beach, was commissioned in 1936 and journeyed a thousand Atlantic crossings. Many incidents of strange rapping noises, moving objects, disembodied voices, and ghostly apparitions have been reported by staff, guests, and investigators on the docked ship. The First Class Swimming Pool, said to be the most haunted place aboard, is haunted by the ghosts of two women who drowned there. One is dressed in 1960s clothing and the other wears 1930s attire. The forlorn ghost of a little boy who fell overboard near the pool has also been sighted in the passageway there. For some unknown reason, many psychics have detected strongly negative feelings in the Changing Rooms at the end of the pool. The old first class lounge, now know as the Queens Salon, is haunted by the ghost of a beautiful woman in a flowing white dress. Unexplainable balls of light and the apparition of a black-haired man in a 1930s suit have been seen by tour guides in the First Class Suite area. The Forward Storage Room, where the ships archives are kept, is haunted by the sounds of children playing. Inexplicable pounding sounds have been recorded near the Bosuns Locker, which is the area of the hull which sliced the British Light Cruiser Curacoa in half during World War II. Because of her wartime sailing orders, the Queen Mary was not allowed to stop to rescue survivors, and 338 men perished in the cold ocean. The Tourist Class Swimming Pool is haunted by the presence of a woman who drowned in it, and the third-level Cabin B340 is haunted by a murdered purser and is no longer rented out because of unexplained disturbances there.
Poltergeist activity has been reported in the Kitchen, where a cook was murdered during World War II. It is said his cooking was so terrible that it caused a riot among troops being carried to the front. The violence quickly got out of hand and the cook ended up stuffed inside an oven and burned to death. His ghastly screams were somehow impregnated into the ship's iron bulkhead and are sometimes replayed to startled visitors. The ghosts in the ships Morgue could have any of a number of identities. Sixteen crewmembers, two G.I.s and 31 passengers have died on the ship. But the most documented sighting is the apparition of an 18-year-old crewman, John Pedder. Pedder was crushed to death while trying to slip through an automatically closing door in Shaft Alley during a routine watertight drill on July 10, 1966. It was watertight door #13. Another crewman haunting the Queen Mary is Senior 2nd Officer William Stark. He was accidentally poisoned in 1949, when he drank tetrachloride that the staff captain kept in an old gin bottle. Dozens and dozens of witnesses have had experiences aboard the Queen Mary Hotel. Will you be next at one of the most haunted hotels on Earth?

45080 Main St, Mendocino, CA (707) 937-0511 - The Mendocino Hotel and Garden Suites opened in 1878 as the Temperance House in the lively logging town of saloons and pool halls in northern California. But the hotel's history was not always as pristine as the hotel is today -- it once served as a bordello for several years. Today, the hotel reports that a Victorian woman haunts tables 6 and 8 in the restaurant, appearing in the mirror. She has been seen in guest rooms and is said to be playful with the housekeepers as well.
The Georgian Hotel
1415 Ocean Ave, Santa Monica, CA (310) 395-9945 - The Georgian Hotel, opened in 1933, in Santa Monica was a place where patrons could enjoy alcoholic spirits during the Prohibition Era. Hotel Jerome
330 E Main St, Aspen, CO (970) 920-1000 - Ever find a lost, shivering and soaking wet boy in your hotel room? Well you might at the Hotel Jerome. A woman recently found just that in Room 310 of the Hotel Jerome. When a staff member arrived to help, the boy had vanished, leaving only wet footprints. At that time, no children were registered in the hotel. Legend has it that a child had drowned in the hotel's original swimming pool. Room 310 is located right in the middle of an addition to the hotel that was built over that original pool.
Stanley Hotel and Conference Center
333 Wonderview, Estes Park, CO (970) 586-3371 - You may heard of an author name Stephen King. And you may have heard of a book and film called "The Shining." Here lies the inspiration within...The Stanley Hotel began construction in 1906 and opened in 1909. F. O. Stanley and his wife Flora built their home nearby and then this hotel. F.O. built a hydroelectric plant up in the mountains so as the hotel could be all electric. He even had phones in every room. Both were quite a luxury at the time. The Stanley was a summer resort so heat was not added until 1979. Before then, any heat in the building came from fireplaces on the first floor. Other than that, it is mostly the same as in 1909. Besides a history that includes the last quarter of the film "Dumb and Dumber," many celebrities and tourists have enjoyed the Stanley over the years. Most notably, Stephen King, who wrote half of "the Shining" in room 217. Stephen King came back when the recent ABC mini-series was filmed here as well. Stanley Kubrick's film version was NOT filmed here. They used sets for most of that film. There aren't any known evil spirits at the Stanley Hotel. The Shining was fiction after all. The ghosts of the owners are still around. In the music room, Mrs. Stanley's favorite, you may hear the piano playing by itself. Or you may feel the presence of Mr. F.O. Stanley around the lobby or in his favorite space, the Billiard room. The fourth floor is the old servant quarters and fairly active with spirits. You will notice the narrow corridors. The sound of children playing in the halls is common. Even when there isn't a child in the building. The center of the activity in the hotel seems to be the very active room 418.
Don Cesar Beach Resort And Spa
3400 Gulf Blvd, St. Pete Beach (727) 360-1881 - "Time is infinite. I wait for you by our fountain . . . to share our timeless love, our destiny is time." Thomas Rowe received the above note upon the death of his beloved Lucinda. The two met in the 1890s when Rowe was attending school in Europe. Lucinda's parents forbade the relationship and the forlorn Rowe returned to America. For years his letters to her were returned unopened. In 1925, Rowe built the Don CeSar Beach Resort and Spa in St. Pete Beach, Florida. The lobby of the hotel included a replica of the courtyard and fountain where Rowe and Lucinda used to meet. Although the fountain no longer exists, employees at the Don CeSar tell tales of seeing a couple who suddenly appear walking hand-in-hand in the hotel and then disappearing.
Jekyll Island Club Hotel
371 Riverview Dr, Jekyll Island, GA (912) 635-2600 - May we read your paper and sip your coffee for you? Well then, you can't complain about a lack of service or hospitality here. Every morning at this exclusive hunt club, Samuel Spencer, president of the Southern Railroad Company, insisted the Wall Street Journal be delivered to his room. For years, it was his ritual to drink a cup of coffee while scanning the paper. In 1906, he was killed instantly in a train accident. Since then, club members and hotel guests who occupied Spencer's room, have found copies of their newspaper disturbed, moved or folded in their absence. Coffee cups have been mysteriously poured or "sipped on" when guests returned from the shower or a brief outing.
Hilton Hotel
2005 Kalia Rd - Honolulu (808) 949-4321 - The ghost of a beautiful young woman in a red dress has been seen wandering the halls here. In 1959, an employee saw her vanish before his eyes as he was escorting her to a room. The Inn at 835
835 South Second St - Springfield, IL (212) 523-4466 - Bell Miller dove into the business world in the 1890s. She went after a "High Society" clientele for her florist business. She was successful and later worked with architect George Helmle to develop six luxury apartments in Springfield. The building is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Four of those luxury apartments were converted to seven guest rooms in 1994 and now, the stories seem to indicate that the spirit of Bell Miller is still in residence. One resident noted hearing a warm and friendly voice saying "Well, hello there." No one was around. Another event included a single book being placed in the middle of the room multiple times. Each time it was moved from a tightly packed shelf, where it would not have fallen from and landed in the middle of the room. Another time, wallpaper began coming off the wall, only to be perfectly repaired by itself by the next morning. And now, you may hear the ting sound of a lid being removed from a crystal candy dish and then replaced, with no one around. You may see a glimpse of a figure passing a doorway. You can select a floor in the elevator but you may wind up somewhere else. The elevator delivers you to random floors regardless of what button you push. Repeated inspections and servicing always proves it to be in perfect working order.... but with a mind of it's own or is there an unseen passenger?
LePavillon
833 Poydras St, New Orleans, LA (504) 581-3111 - A paranormal research team has identified four ghosts at LePavillon, a New Orleans landmark hotel built in 1907. One, a frightened and confused teen-age girl named Eva , Ava or Ada, is believed to have lived during the 1840s and was preparing to embark on a ship when she was struck and killed by a carriage. There is also a report of a young aristocratic couple from the 1920s and a dark-suited man from the same era who is known to play pranks on the hotel cleaning staff.
Hotel Maison Deville
727 Rue Toulouse, New Orleans, LA (504) 561-5858 - Like country music? Then here is a haunted place for you. The spirit of a soldier with a preference for loud country music is said to reside at the Hotel Maison de Ville. A 23-year employee of the hotel first encountered the ghost around 20 years ago, while she was letting a guest into Cottage No. 4. She and the guest entered the room and saw a man dressed in a military uniform. She felt a chill, shook a bit and then the apparition disappeared. The employee also reports that every time she changes the cottage's radio to a classical music station, the ghost changes it back to a country music station as soon as she leaves.
Grand Avenue Bed and Breakfast
1615 Grand Ave, Carthage, MO (417) 358-7265 - No smoking please. That is the request that is not obeyed here in Carthage. At least by one person who has passed on. It is believe there is a male ghost here at Grand Avenue, noted mostly for his cigar smoke.
Walnut Street Inn
900 E. Walnut St - Springfield, MO (417) 864-6346 - The Walnut Street Inn was built as a three story Victorian house was built by Charles McMann in the mid-1890s. The original oak floors that once had McMann's guests dancing are still in excellent condition. The leaded glass windows and four original light fixtures are still kept polished and pristine by the current innkeepers. The west side carriage entrance once used by the McManns is still in use. In 1992, the carriage house was renovated into four guest rooms. Many guest of the Rosen Room has reported a ghostly presence. In 1998, a gentleman guest reported that he was stretched out on the bed when he looked up and saw a female sitting at at table against the wall. "Excuse me, this is my room," he said. The apparition turned to him and said, "No, this is my room." He shook himself, thinking he may be sleep. The ghost then just disappeared. The staff has since investigated and learned that she may have been in her 70s when she passed away and has stayed on to watch over the house. So feel safe and secure when booking the Rosen Room at the Walnut Street Inn. You'll be watched over while you sleep...
Chico Hot Springs Lodge and Ranch
Hwy 89 South , Pray, MT (406) 333-4933 - In May 1986, two night watchmen at this resort hotel came upon the nebulous form of a young woman hovering near a piano in the third floor Lounge. Only the upper body of the white ghost appeared, the rest tailed down to nothing. The face of the peaceful apparition stared right at them for several minutes, enough time for one of the guards to grab a camera from a nearby table and snap a photograph. Only a tiny white spot on the film showed up where the ghost had stood. The same apparition had been seen by guests several times in the past, but this was the first time the Lady in White was photographed. In 1990, two other security guards followed the Lady in White from Lobby to the hallway leading to Room 349, where the presence has been reported by many employees and guests. An antique rocker in the room always ends up facing a window, no matter in which room it is placed.
Other unexplainable things happening include an old family Bible that stays open on a wooden bench in the Attic and never collects any dust. The most likely cause for all the activity would be Percie Knowles, the stubborn wife of the man who built the hotel in 1900. After her husbands 1910 demise, she changed it into a first-class healthcare center. She died in 1941, but her resilient spirit lives on.
Goldfield Hotel
PO Box 225, Goldfield, NV (702) 485-6365 - This property is closed off and abandoned.
Built on top of an abandoned gold mine, this 154-room hotel was opened in 1908. The hotel is considered home to several ghosts. In the downstairs employees' area, Room 109 is a small room with a single bed. The room is haunted by the presence of a pregnant woman. Psychics have seen her ghost chained to a radiator there. Rumors say a pregnant prostitute named Elizabeth was chained in the room by George Winfield, the original owner of the hotel. After giving birth, the woman was left to die in the room and the baby was thrown down the old mine shaft at the northern end of the basement. Elizabeth's ghost even turned up on a photograph taken in the room by a reporter from Las Vegas. On the first floor, the George Winfield Room is said to be haunted by his ghost. Untraceable cigar smoke and fresh ashes have been found there. George's presence has also been detected near the Lobby Staircase, where the ghosts of a midget, and two small children have also been seen. The Gold Room is haunted by a ghost that "stabs" people. High psychic energy has been detected in the Theodore Roosevelt Room and a southwest room on the third floor. Some psychics say that the Goldfield Hotel is one of only seven portals to the Other Side that exist in the modern world.
Lodge at Cloudcroft
1 Corona Place , Cloudcroft, NM (505) 682-2566 - The Lodge at Cloudcroft, an 85 year-old inn contains the Rebecca restaurant. It was named after a ghost and her portraits, including a stained-glass window, are scattered throughout the property. Several dozen employees and guests at this mountain resort have seen the apparition of a woman wearing a long dress, wandering the lodge halls. Rebecca was a beautiful, young maid with striking blue eyes and red hair, who was murdered by a jealous lumberjack at the inn back in the 1930s. Rebecca is called a flirtatious, mischievous spirit, who likes to use the telephone in Room 101, the Governor's Suite. Guests in that room sometimes receive phone calls from nowhere, and operators at the resort say that the line to Room 101 is often lit up, even when no one is in the suite. Rebecca's presence is also felt in the Red Dog Saloon, where ashtrays move by themselves and flames appear in the fireplace with no logs or other source of fuel.

Inn on Main Street
88 S Main St, Weaverville, NC (877) 873-6074 - Although the innkeepers won't say it's haunted, there have been interesting "energies" in this Weaverville inn. Like the New Year's Eve where they heard pictures fall off the wall twice, then never found anything that had fallen, and also heard someone open, then close the back door. And again, nobody was there. The house was built 100 years ago by a doctor. There's a blood stain under the tiles in a bathroom that was once part of his operating room and lab. It will not sand out. The innkeepers know at least one person has died in the house. The innkeepers invite guests to share the good energy and try to connect with souls who have passed on.
Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza

401 Baltimore St, Gettysburg, PA (717) 334-8838 - This charming inn and restaurant is located in one of the most haunted places in the USGettysburg, Pennsylvania, the site of the crucial battle during the Civil War. The loss of life at Gettysburg was tremendous, and the entire area is steeped in heavy energy, and riddled with restless ghosts almost anywhere you go. The Farnsworth House offers more than just a bed and some sleep. Several of the rooms are haunted with six actually being cited on their web site. Gettysburg is a not just a town with a haunted hotel. It's pretty much a haunted town. Wherever you stay, you may feel or see something out of time and earthly place. Overall, youll find no shortage of ghostly phenomena around town. Most common reports have been on the battlefield and the Gettysburg College. There is a ghost tour at night, like many historic cities are now doing, that highlights the area haunts.
Bullock Hotel
633 Main St, Deadwood, SD (605) 578-1745 - The hotel was founded by Seth Bullock, Deadwood's first sheriff, and he has never left. His ghost walks the halls. Bullock was sheriff in the 1870s and died here in 1919 but was never really laid to rest. He was the sheriff "whose gaze could stop fights." Since then, nearly three dozen people have seen his ghost. These include guests, employees, and managers of the hotel.
The Menger Hotel
204 Alamo Plaza, San Antonio, TX (210) 223-4361 - One night after an argument with her husband, Sallie White, a chambermaid at The Menger Hotel in San Antonio, stayed at the hotel (presumably with another man). The next day her husband threatened to kill her. On March 28, 1876, Sallie was attacked by her husband and she died two days later. The hotel paid for the funeral cost of $32, as recorded in the hotel ledger. Legend has it that Sallie White still roams the halls of the Victorian wing of the hotel. A few years ago, a guest wanted extra towels. He opened the door of his room and called out to a maid who ignored him. The guest called the front desk to inquire why the maid was so rude. He described the maid and her uniform -- one that was worn in the late 1800s.
Radisson Ben Lomond Suite Hotel
2510 Washington Blvd, Ogden, UT (801) 627-1900 - The elevator stops at floors where no buttons have been pushed. The front desk receives call from room 1106 -- when no one is staying in that room. The telephone line goes dead. The spirit causing these pranks is believed to belong to a woman who stayed at the hotel in the 1940s. She was awaiting word of a son injured in World War II. The son died and the woman then returned home. Apparently her spirit is back for an extended stay into the next millennium.
The Equinox
3567 Main St, Manchester, VT (802) 362-4700 - Mary Todd Lincoln and her children from Washington D.C., spent two summers at The Equinox, built in 1769, in Manchester Village, Vt. The family planned to return the summer of 1865, but plans changed after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. The family's ties to the area continued and strengthened with son Robert Todd Lincoln's purchase of neighboring estate Hildene. Employees at the hotel report seeing images on the third floor of a woman and a child that are consistent with descriptions of Mary Todd Lincoln and one of her sons. Perhaps through their visits they are trying to recapture the care free days of those summers.
Wayside Inn
424 E Wisconsin Ave, Middletown, VA (540) 869-1797 - Guests and employees at the Wayside Inn in Middletown, Virginia, have reported seeing images of Civil War veterans in the lobby. During the Civil War, the area was occupied by soldiers from both the North and the South and the inn served as a hospital. Reports range from seeing outlined figures of soldiers in blue and gray uniforms to hearing footsteps and someone talking. These so far friendly sightings add to the inn's historic charm and atmosphere.
Thornewood Castle
Reservations required. No walk ups. Tacoma, WA (253) 584-4393 - Chester Thorne was the builder of Thornewood Castle, and he has made several appearances over the years. Light bulbs will be unscrewed in his room, after the lights were turned off and no one else was present. Some guests have seen Anna, Chester's wife, sitting in the window seat of her room overlooking the garden. Some have claimed to see her reflection in her original mirror in the room she occupied, which is now the bridal suite. The Thorne's son in law shot himself in the gun closet, and his ghost has been seen. Another ghost is of the grandchild of a former owner who drowned in the lake. Occasionally guests will rush down from our Grandview Suite concerned because there's a small child alone by the lake, and then find no child there.
A Stephen King miniseries titled "Rose Red" was recently filmed in Thornewood Castle. The six-hour, made-for-television ABC/Disney miniseries is scheduled to air in February 2002. The miniseries is from a pre-accident script.
Renaissance Mayflower Hotel
1127 Connecticut Ave, Washington D.C. (202) 347-3000 - Some strange occurrences have been reported at The Renaissance Mayflower Hotel that appear to be linked to the inauguration of President Calvin Coolidge. Coolidge did not attend his own inaugural ball in 1925 because he was mourning the death of his 16-year-old son. Every year since 1937, on Jan. 20 (Inauguration Day) the lights in the Grand Ballroom flicker and dim at around 10 p.m., the time that the first guests were announced for Coolidge's inauguration.
Hotel staff have reported finding a plate of exquisite hors d'oeuvres and a glass of fine wine in Grand Ballroom balcony. Neither item had been served at any function on that day. And one elevator refuses to move from the eighth floor to the lobby level until 10:15 p.m. -- the approximate time Coolidge would have arrived at the ball from his holding room.
Hay-Adams Hotel
800 16th St NW, Washington D.C. (202) 638-6600 - The Hay-Adams Hotel may be haunted by the spirit of Clover Adams, the wife of original owner Henry Adams. It is said that the spirit of Mrs. Adams, who committed suicide in 1885, inhabits the fourth floor of the hotel.
Staff have experienced the mysterious opening and closing of locked doors, clock radios mysteriously turning on and off, the sounds of a woman crying softly in a room or stairwell, and the voice of a woman asking a housekeeper, "What do you want?" in an empty room. Some housekeepers say they have been called by name and received a hug while cleaning rooms.
These incidents happen most frequently during the first two weeks of December, around the anniversary of her death.
The Pfister Hotel
424 E Wisconsin Ave, Milwaukee, WI (414) 273-8222 - Charles Pfister, founder of The Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee, still visits to ensure that his guests are well taken care of at his century-old "Grand Hotel of the West." A "visitor" has been spotted surveying the lobby from the grand staircase, strolling the minstrel's gallery above the ballroom, and passing through the ninth floor storage area. He is always described in roughly the same terms: "older," "portly," "smiling," and "well-dressed." Upon seeing a portrait of Charles Pfister, witnesses swore that it was the man they had seen.
