| Children In Crisis: The Facts Street Children According to the UN there were 142 million street children worldwide in 1996. That is more than the entire population of France and Great Britain combined. In South America there are at least 40 million street children; in Asia 25 million; in Africa 10 million; and in Eastern and Western Europe approximately 25 million children and youth live on the streets. In Brazil over 1,000 street children die each year. That's about four children per day. Every third Brazilian child dies before its 18th birthday. Child Soldiers During the civil war in Liberia, UNICEF reports that there were at least 20,000 child soldiers on the battlefield, some as young as 6 years old. According to UNICEF, in 1995/96 250,000 child soldiers under 16 years of age were fighting in at least 30 nations. The latest statistics indicate that number has now risen to 300,000 child soldiers Sexually Exploited Children The UN reports that 1 million children become prostitutes each year. Worldwide, an estimated 10 million children are victims of today's sex industry. There are between 300,000 and 500,000 child prostitutes in India; 1 million in Asia; 500,000 in Brazil; and 150,000 in the United States. In Bangkok, 40,000 of the 100,000 prostitutes are under 14 years old. In Sri Lanka some 10,000 boys work as child prostitutes. Children of War In 1996, UNICEF estimated that wars within the past ten years had killed 2 million children, disabled 4-5 million, left 12 million children homeless, orphaned another 1million, and psychologically traumatized 10 million children. Approximately half of the 53 million people forced to flee from wars in the past 50 years were/are children. Girl children In some countries of the world, more than twice as many boys receive medical treatment than girls. In Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan the discrimination of girls results in more than one million deaths. Child Laborers According to the U.S. Department of Labor, there are between 100 and 300 million working children in the world. The Department of Labor also estimates that Africa and Asia together account for over 90% of total child employment. The government of India claims that only 18 million children work in India, yet child activists estimate that closer to 48 million children work there. Children With AIDS WHO reports that in 1997 alone, 600,000 children worldwide became infected with HIV. If the spread of HIV is not contained, AIDS may increase the mortality rates of children under five by more than 100% in regions most affected by the disease |

| A Picture of Lifes that Have Been Changed These boys used to live on the streets of St. Petersburg, Russia. They come from a village that is one of the poorest in Russia. Children feel they have to go to the streets to survive. Because of a new ministry in their village, these boys now live at home. They can once again go to school and play. They are free to be kids. The ministry that reaches these children was inspired by a fifteen year old former street boy.
