| Only a select few books have a plot that is even somewhat equal to that of The Giver. The Giver is set in a futuristic community in which everything that is a hazard to us now, (which is anything ranging from snow to war) has been forgotten and eliminated. The story focuses on a boy named Jonas, who like every other child gets a special job (assignment) on his twelfth birthday. Each assignment is chosen for each child based on each child's personality. But most children have at least one other child who has the same assignment. In Jonas' case his assignment is unique to himself. Not only is it unique but he is not allowed to tell anyone what goes on in it. His assignment is to go to a man called the Giver who possesses all the memories of the hazards that have been destroyed. The Giver is supposed to pass all the memories to Jonas so that he can possess the information that gives him the know-how to stop the hazards from ever returning. These memories turn Jonas' world upside-down. All the memories of the war, famine and hatred change Jonas forever. Louis Lowry does an exceptional job with this book. Every detail is beautifully drawn out and the plot is intriguing. Few other books can compare. The Giver is a definite must-read! | ||||||||||||||||||||
