It was the last day of classes before summer term started, and he had plans. Tonight, he’d write to Possa, in both snail mail and e-mail. He was just glad that they had exchanged addresses before they were drawn from the Digital World. In fact, they’d done it—well, when they did it didn’t matter. That they did it was all that was important and Malie was looking forward to going home and writing Possa a nice long letter. As usual, Malie took the long way home, the one that took him over the beach. It didn’t really matter what time he got home, so long as he could beat his dad there. For some reason, when Makani got home before he did, he found reasons to chew him out. Especially lately. Luckily, he did make it home before Makani, and Malie hauled up in his room, writing his letter to Possa, until his father came home. Part of the summer went in much of the same manner—Malie going out and trying to make it home before his father did. Unfortunately, one evening in early July, his father made it home first by a few minutes. Malie pushed open the door to his house, praying that his father wasn’t home. His hair was soaked as he had just been surfing, and he stepped into his house, pushing the door shut behind him. He didn’t see his father; that was good. He made it as far as the threshold to his room and managed to get the surfboard in the door. “Malie…” It was his father’s voice, and he had growled his name. Malie winced and turned around. “Yeah, dad?” “Don’t you ‘Yeah, dad’ me! Where had you been?” Makani’s voice was soft. The situation couldn’t be any worse than this would turn out. “I was out, dad,” Malie responded. “Doing what?” “Surfing.” “Surfing… SURFING?” Malie heard his father choke over the words and he spit them out like they were poisonous. “What the hell do you think you were doing, Malie?” “Enjoying myself.” “En—“ Malie heard his father cut off. I’m in trouble… “Surfing is not a game, Malie!” his father half-shouted. “I will not have you participating in that sport under my roof!” “It’s not done under your roof,” Malie told him. A second too late he realized that was the wrong thing to say. “If you’re so eager to continue doing it, then get out of my house!” Makani howled. “You’ve been nothing but a good-for-nothing freeloader all year. GET OUT!” With that, Malie watched as Makani stormed into his room, slamming the door. He could hear the wood of the door splinter. “You really stepped in it this time,” said Keahi from the doorway to her room. “I noticed.” “Look, when you leave, take as much with you as you can,” Keahi advised. “Then, when you get wherever you’re going, mail me with you’re address. I’ll send the rest along, if it’s still here.” Malie nodded and went into his room. Pulling out his largest bag, he stuffed most of his clothes, and his blankets into it. Then came a few romance novels, some writing materials, his laptop, and last of all, his DTU. There was no way he was leaving that behind. He then grabbed the stash of money he had under his mattress and left, giving Keahi a quick hug. Out on the beach, he stopped and sat down. Malie pulled out his lap top and turned it on, connecting to the internet. He looked to see if Possa was on, but she wasn’t and he had to settle for an email. Possa, Look, I’ve just had a change of address. The only problem is that I don’t know what my new address is going to be, yet. See, my dad just kicked me out of my house and I have no where to go… I promise I’ll let you know when I’ve found a place to stay. Hugs, Malie. He sighed, shutting the laptop down and put his head in his hands. This was a right mess he’d gotten himself into. If only… Well, whatever he did differently probably wouldn’t change. He had the here and now to worry about, and the tide was coming closer and closer to his bag… That brought Malie out of his thoughts and he snatched up the bag. The top was dripping wet, half-open. Quickly he closed it, not bothering to see what was wet. He never noticed that his DTU wasn’t there and that something else had taken its place. The response from Possa was so warm and inviting that Malie decided to get his behind to her home as quickly as he could, which was a few days later. Met with hugs from Possa at her door, he was introduced to her family. It was a relief that he wasn’t immediately kicked out of their home, and he had promised that he would find a place of his own as quickly as he could. They had agreed to it, though they were somewhat curious as to how he and Possa had met. Ah, but that was for some other time. Now, Malie was most concerned with getting out his clothes for the day from his bag. Picking it up, he unceremoniously dumped the contents onto the floor and started sifting through them. Unable to spot his DTU, he nearly freaked… until he found something else. This new device looked so much better than the DTU, and it had a phoenix on it. He was surprised at it, and just a bit confused. His first reaction was to go see Possa. “Hey, Possa… Have you seen your DTU, lately?”
