Domestic Violence is a problem that encompasses
all countries, sexes, ages, income groups and
cultures. Each individual person requires an
individual solution.
We need to look at the short term, as well as
long term help that is available to the victim
of abuse. Short term help is made up of
assistance programs that will protect the
abuse victim from the abuser as well as from
themselves. This is the period when the victim
is at most risk from the abuser and when the victim
is most likely to return home out of a sense of
hopelessness. Short term assistance can provide
food, shelter and guidance to the victim of abuse.
Long term help is an effort to educate the public
and set the abuse victim on the path of a life
that does not include violence.
The use of Family Crisis Centers or Victim Advocates
to serve as the victims link to the health, legal
and social aid that is needed at this time will
prevent the victim from being bantered around from
one agency to another. Support is available in
various forms:

Crisis Intervention:

-
shelters or other emergency residential facilities

medical services

transportation networks
-
laws that allow either victims or
perpetrators to be removed from the home

Advocacy and Legal Assistance:

restraining orders
-
public assistance benefits
-
help with immigration status
