Hakama are pleated, and split down the middle like pants, but some aren't. Every pleat has a different symbolic meaning, and they have a specific way of putting them on.

Hakama are also used in Martial arts such as Kendo and Aikido. They can also be worn by women as seen down below.

Hakama are usually worn by men, and nowadays are used for formal attire in Japanese ceremonies or Weddings. Back in the olden days, it was worn to protect a samurai's legs when he sat ahorse, but now they are used for symbolism and beauty.
