| The present church was designed in 1721 by James Gibbs, after the previous one, redesigned in 1607, had been pulled down. Gibbs built the church in the Italian baroque style. Four years before beginning his work on the new saint Martin's, he completed his Wren influenced St. Mary le strand, which still stands not far from St. Martin's. The church was much critisised at the time of its completion, but despite this, it has had many copies of it been built around the world, especially in the USA. |
