Carlisle has a population of 75,000, and is the county capital of Cumbria (former Cumberland). Carlisle is one of England's oldest cities, and has a cathedral and castle. The tallest building is the civic centre, which at only 8 floors is still one of Cumbria's tallest buildings.
Carlisle is 60 miles west of Newcastle, 98 miles south of Glasgow, and about  100 miles north of Manchester. Carlisle is the regional shopping capital of far north west England and southern Scotland, as well as being important county-wise in terms of industry.
Carlisle Millennium bridge, and Carlisle castle

After opening in Autumn 2000, the Millennium bridge caused much controversy; the bridge was accused of not being in keeping with the ancient castle. However, over time people have grown to accept it, though some opinions can't be changed.
