Newcastle upon Tyne
Newcastle upon Tyne, the largest city of England's North-east, has undergone a major regeneration over the past decade, teamed up with the neighbouring town of Gateshead.
Projects have included the (now famous) Millennium Bridge, the Baltic Art Gallery, and the Angel of the North (off the A1). Newcastle also has some of the best shops in Britain, including the Metro Centre (formerly Europe's largest shopping centre).
Newcastle is a major British provincial city, and was shortlisted for the European Capital of Culture award
* (which in the end went to Liverpool).

* Newcastle and Gateshead had a joint venture for the capital of culture award. Many major projects were done joint between the 2 cities, as they both lie on either banks of the River Tyne.
