The M6 motorway is Britain's longest motorway at 230 miles in length. The road terminates off the M1 near Rugby, and heads north, eventually reaching Carlisle. It passes the UK's 2nd largest city, Birmingham, as well as the highly populated area around Lancashire and Cheshire. The M6 Toll, Britain's first toll motorway, opened in December 2003, relieving the heavily congested section of the M6 around the West Midlands connurbation.
Recent plans to extend the M6 from its current end point at Carlisle, to the A74(M) at Gretna, have been met with great approval, at last 'blocking the Cumberland Gap'. Once the extension is complete, there will be a direct motoway from Glasgow to Birmingham. Although it is as yet unconfirmed, the A74(M) and M74 may be re-numbered to become part of the M6.
