The M1 motorway commences off London's North Circular road, at Staples junction. It was Britain's first full-length motorway to open; the first part of it (junction 5 - junction 18) opened in 1959. The newest part of the M1 was opened in 1999, linking the M1 to the A1(M), north of Leeds.
The M1 is an important north-south route to the country - 140,000 people a day drive on it, ten times what was originally predicted on opening.
