Carlisle
North-west England
Carlisle is a small city with a population of around 75,000, and is the county capital of Cumbria (former Cumberland). Carlisle is one of England's oldest cities, having receved its charter in 1158 AD, and has a cathedral and a castle. The tallest building in Carlisle is the Civic Centre, which although only 8 storeys high, is still amongst Cumbria's tallest buildings, and is considered by many to be ugly.
Carlisle is 60 miles west of Newcastle, 98 miles south of Glasgow, and 120 miles north of Manchester. Carlisle is the regional shopping centre for Cumbria and fsouthern Scotland, as well as being important as a county town.

Carlisle Millennium Bridge, and Carlisle Castle

After opening in Autumn 2000, the Millennium bridge caused much controversy; the bridge was accused of not being in keeping with the ancient castle. However, over time people have grown to accept it, though some people still dislike its presence.
