| Paris, the capital and largest city of France, is one of the most famous and awe-inspiring cities in the world. Filled with superb architecture, modern and old, it attracts many visitors. The river Seine flows through the city, under many finely crafted 19th century bridges. The tallest structure of France, the Eiffel tower, is located in Paris. Reaching to a pinacle of 300 metres, it towers above the city, and for years it was the world's tallest structure. Ironically, the Eiffel tower, now seen as one of the most beautiful man-made things in the world, was at first hated by the people of Paris. Its controversial shape and sheer size meant it stuck out terribly on the 19th century Parisian skyline. Even today, with the coming of skyscrapers to the city, the tower dominates above all else. |
| Paris doesn't immediently spring to mind when you think of skyscrapers, but it does have one of the largest collections of tall buildings in Europe. Most skyscraper activity in Paris is in La Defense, a similar idea to Canary Wharf (a business district outside of the city centre). La Defense is located outside the historic heart of Paris, in order to avoid spoiling views of its older buildings. |
