Scottish Gaelic is spoken in the highlands of Scotland, as well as Nova Scotia ('New Scotland') in Canada. There are also devotees of the language around the world. In Scotland, there are 70,000 speakers, 10% (7,000) of whom live in Glasgow. Gaelic has simalarities to Old Norse, and French (in Gaelic some of the words sound similar to French but the spellings are nothing like). In Scotland, programmes of Scottish Gaelic are broadcast, to cater for the tens of thousands of Gaelic speakers. Unfortunately, due to the dominance of English, Gaidhlig (Scottish Gaelic) is a language no longer widely spoken, and iss in decline. Use the links to find out a little Gaidhlig for yourself! |
