| The A1 and A1(M) London - Edinburgh |
| The A1, known to many as the Great North Road, begins its course in London, and along its route passes many towns and cities, including Newcastle and the North East connurbation. Parts of the road have been upgraded to motorway standard, and these parts are known as the A1(M) - these are completely seperate from the M1. Some parts of the A1(M) are dual four-lane in width (such as near Peterborough), whereas others are only dual two-lane (around Doncaster and County Durham). Sections of the A1 between Newcastle and Edinburgh are still single carriageway, despite the need for greater capacity. The A1 is one of the principal Arterial routes of Great Britain, and is also one of the busiest, as the photo illustrates on the left. Widening There are new sections of A1(M) currently under construction (including the Wetherby by-pass), and in time the whole of the A1 from north of Leeds to Newcastle shall be upgraded to motorway standard (A1(M)). The new sections will be of dual three-lane standard. Although it is by no means certain, it is possible that the A1(M) north of where the M1 currently ends may be re-numbered as the M1, creating one motorway from London to Newcastle. |
