DWARFISM is a MEDICAL TERM that effects MOST species of mammals.
Through selective breeding of these large headed, compact dogs, we eventually established our beloved breed: the Chihuahua.
Entombed remains of these original, large headed short limbed small dogs indicate that they may have been worshipped, like "idols, ancient 'gods', and ceremonial creatures". The exact role these dogs played within the ceremonies themselves will remain somewhat of a mystery.
Make NO mistake! They were not "VICTEMS" sacrificed and slaughtered by ancient peoples. They were longer lived than larger breed dogs of their time, and perhaps this is what ancient peoples were most intrigued by.
PHILOSOPHY The very smallest of these ancient DWARF CANINES were easy to carry, possessed "radar like" pointed ears, and served as watch dogs or "portable alarms" if you will, to the ancient nomadic human tribesman. These dogs ate and drank very little, and would not have provided early man with much meat if they were to be used as a food source. Larger dogs, and ancient wolves were much more likely to have ended up on the dinner plate. There is no doubt that the DWARF CANINES were highly prized, and difficult to come by. One should also credit early man with having a similar attatchment to their livestock, as we do to our modern day pets. Many believe that if it were not for the DOG, we would not have "evolved" to reach the top of the food chain!
Perhaps modern day man's strong ties to man's best friend are just as instinctive. People with pets live longer, healthier lives. Looking at our history, it's no SMALL WONDER why.
I'm sure these points have been up for debate since the dawn of mankind, and will continue to the end. We'll still be here, happily toting our Chihuahuas around!
