STREET KIDS

SALESIAN PROJECT

Educational Proposal

The Salesian Project "Children of the street" since its beginning, two decades ago, has been interested in configuring an educative proposal in such a way that we can help to children of the streets and working kids who are in a special risk situation.

The perspective of work has being changing during these years because of new points of view on childhood, on new challenges of the most ecuadorian poor people and because of the educational experience gained in the specific work with the children of the street.

Two decades ago the work was made to protect and rehabilitate children from the negative influence of the streets on the children behavior. What the children received as a educational proposal was a protective institution service. In this perspective the main interest is the "institution".

But along the way we realized the different difficulties that appeared because of the "institutionalized perspective", specially, the "children dependence" of the institution. This challenged the Salesian project to find out new strategies to work with them. That's the reason because the Salesian Project began to work with families, schools, neighborhood organizations and with the children in their street enviroment. This new perspective has given a privilege to two important strategies: prevention and promotion. The Salesian Project tries not only to avoid children becoming "negative children in the streets", but it is more importante to offer them alternative choices of promotion to better the quality of their lives. The more important thing is to find with them new horizons for their future.
