During the Great Depression, Roosevelt help the American people regain faith in themselves. Businessmen and bankers were turning more and more against Roosevelts New Deal Program. They were in the state of fear mostly because the Nation had been taken off the gold standard and allowed deficits in the budget. Roosevelt responded with a new program of reform, he put forth Social Security, heavier taxes on the wealthy, new controls over banks and public utilities, and an enormous work relief program for the unemployment problem of the United States. Roosevelt had pledged the US to the good neighbor policy. He also fought to help the US out of the war with England. Then all of a sudden the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Roosevelt organized resources for global war devoted much thought to the plan of making a United Nations, in which international difficulties could be settled. Roosevelt ended up dying of a cerebral hemorrhage on April 12, 1945 in Georgia, but his legacy will always be remembered.
