CZECH POPPY SEED CAKE (MAKOVY KOLAC)

1/2 pound Butter
1 1/4 cups Sugar
4 Eggs -- separated
1/2 cup Poppy seeds
1/2 cup Milk -- warmed
1/2 pint Sour cream
1 teaspoon Baking soda
1 teaspoon Vanilla
Soak poppy seeds in milk overnight. Beat egg whites until
still and set aside. Cream butter and sugar; add egg yolks
and beat well. Mix in poppy seeds, sour cream, soda, flour
and vanilla. Fold in egg whites.
Bake in an ungreased tube pan at 350F for approximately 50
minutes.
NOTE: This could also be baked in two 9" round cake pans and filled with a
lemon filling and frosted with whipped cream
if you like.
