The effort of this site is dedicated to
the 'BURGE
66'. The Chicago Police Department has
tortured at least 66 African American men. This torture was done at the
hands of Jon Burge and/or his direct underlings. You will find at this
site the documentation and public record of this history. You will also
find updates as to specific cases and efforts to rectify and bring justice
to this very sensitive and insufferable situation.
Jon Burge was
Commander of Detectives before he was finally fired (not 'Retired' as
Chicago Alderman and other City Spokespeople are instructed to say) in
1993. Patrick O'Hara and John Yucaitis are two other Police Officers who
were fired along with Burge. O'Hara and Yucaitis were later reinstated
after the Police Union called the 'F.O.P. (Fraternal Order of Police)
appealed on their behalf. They were later 'Merit Promoted' to the rank of
Detective under a controversial program instituted by Mayor Daley. JON
BURGE RETAINS HIS PENSION AND TODAY RESIDES IN APOLLO, FLORIDA WHERE HE
OPERATES A FISHING BUSINESS ON A BOAT HE CALLS 'VIGILANTE'.
This is
the most intense and egregious cover-up in Chicago history. It has been a
very frustrating and difficult struggle for the people of the City of
Chicago. Only smaller local publications have been willing to do news
stories on this issue.

the history of the situation from coming to light.

On June 30th, 1999 a group of citizens held
a civil disobedience in the Cook County States Attorney's Office. The
demand was for evidence he was witholding in a Death Sentence case where
the inmate was also a Burge victim. Several people were arrested and
held for half a day. There was no media coverage and no Official result.

On July 19th, 1999 several citizen groups
with the help of a partisan organization held a civil disobedience at
Chicago City Council, in which there were arrests, for the purpose of
exposing the relationship of the Mayor and States Attorney to this
cover-up. This part of the story was completely ignored by the media. In
their usual spin form the Mayors Office declared the Mayor now supported
the idea of a moratorium on the Death Penalty in an attempt to make him
look like some kind of hero. Click
