Inventions and Attractions

The Chicago World's Fair was full of the lastest and the greatest inventions and attractions. The best bright minds that America had to offer were showcased in this world exposition. Of all the revolutionary inventions that were revealed at the fair, the most famous was the Ferris Wheel. The Ferris Wheel was designed and built by George Ferris and was intended to best the Eiffel Tower, which was revealed at the Paris World's Fair 4 years earlier. The Wheel was 264 feet high and had 36 cars. These cars were larger than the ones known today and could fit 60 people on at a time, meaning that the Ferris Wheel could fit up to 2000 people at one time. If you look at the picture at the top of the page, you can see the Ferris Wheel at the top of the map.

Some products introduced at the fair include Cracker Jacks, Juicy Fruit gum, Quaker Oats, Cream of Wheat, shredded Wheat, the zipper and the Hamburger. The United States Post Office produced its first picture postcards and Commemorative stamp set for the fair. The U.S. Mint offered its first commemorative coins (a quarter and a half dollar). An electrical device develped by Nikola Tesla was introduced, which included a two-phase induction motor, and generators to power the Ferris Wheel.
