- Credits go to Dragonball-Z-GT for providing the basis for this "Fansub Guide" -
- Credits go to the Keeper of the Vault for making some corrections to the ep #s contained in certain tapes -
Important Note -- This Fansub Guide is useful only, I think, for those of you who plan to purchase DBZ Jap fansubs from this little basement shop in Elizabeth Street Mall in Chinatown, Manhattan, NYC, NY, US (can I get any more specific? ^_^). I advise that you personally go to the shop yourself or maybe send one of your friends/relatives to buy them for you if you do not live near the place described above. Tapes cost only $5/tape and the average tape contains 3 eps, with a max of 4 eps (rarely, though). Therefore, I don't advise wasting money on E-Bay betting on such fansubs/CDRs or buying fansubs through an online distributor when you can get them at a much cheaper rate if you go to the Elizabeth Center Street Mall basement.
If you do manage to get there ^^;, you will find two shops that sell DBZ fansubs. DO NOT go to the one on the corner (you'll see what I mean when you get there), for their subs are generally low TV quality. For better quality fansubs, go instead to the smaller shop that is adjacent to two vid game shops, and which is usually manned by a young Chinese dude on the weekends. Although the quality (visual/audio) may vary from tape to tape, his subs are, for some reason, often better than those of the corner shop. As a final note, his tapes are distinguished by custom-made tape labels that have DBZ pics on them. Good luck getting cheap fansubs!!!
All changes made by the Keeper of the Vault to correct ep #s corresponding to certain tapes will be denoted with a blue asterisk * like so. I could only make valid changes after I actually purchased the tapes whose ep #s are contestable, and since I'm a cheapskate even with regards to buying DBZ fansubs, don't expect to see too many edits between this version and DB/Z/GT's. I just wanted to make this section so people could more easily read the list of tapes and made some corrections so that you people won't feel cheated. In general, if you are unsure of what eps any particular tape contains, look at the tapes immediately before and after that one. Use the "3 eps per tape" and "4-ep tapes usually occur at the beginning/end of each saga" rules to adjust ep #s for the tapes contested if you want to.
Please note that most ^_^ ep #s and their corresponding tape #s are correct and valid as of May 25, 2001. The Keeper is not responsible for any incorrect tape #s corresponding to any given tape (for example, if it says in this guide that the V1 tape of the Gotenks Saga contains eps 251-254 and it actually only has 251-253). All disputes should be settled with the source ^_^, namely the fansub distributor.

Note: The first and last tapes of DB are blurry; the source tapes are over a decade old. However, the tapes in between are clear.
*** Updated 5.26.01 - Clear my ass! ^_^ After viewing the two DB tapes covering eps 135-139 and 140-144, the Keeper of the Vault has found that they are lower quality than most of the clearer DBZ fansubs. Whether or not the reason is because DB aired in the 80s primarily rather than DBZ in the 90s, the visual quality is definitely not as clear as DragonBall-Z-GT would have you believe (but then again, isn't he the one trying to sell them?). For one thing, I found out tonight that some eps in the two tapes I bought had such low visual quality that even the best video tracking VCR would have a hard time rectifying the problem. What you would see in like 10-second intervals are grayish lines taking over the bottom half of the screen. They dissipate a bit, only to return a few seconds later. And on top of it all, the spectacular fight between Goku and Piccolo was going on! Inexcusable! Generalizing from what I've seen from two tapes, I think most of the tapes below vary between 3 levels of quality. First being almost impossible to view, second being able to see a somewhat clear image for half the time, and third being a relatively decent visual quality for an "80s tape." As with all fansubs, you cannot determine the quality beforehand, so there's always some risk for your money. All I can do is uncover what I know, and that's what I've done here. -Later-
