As the DBZ series progresses, the fan may note that the looks and faces of the characters change (such as from a more round to a more pointy nose, etc). Since there are 291 eps of DBZ, it is conceivable that Toriyama failed to maintain the same physical looks for his characters throughout the entire series. Even though it is probable that this distortion is utilized to demonstrate character aging, it is most likely the result of a combination of two factors - a gradual loosening of control by Toriyama on drawing and animating the show and the tendency of a character's physical features to evolve with the artist's age.
Though it may be debatable as to whether Toriyama let others manage the show as he became more of a family man, it is obvious that a significant shift in character looks and the style of animation began with the start of the Orange Star HS Saga (the Majin Boo Saga on a larger scope). The animation was of far lower quality than, for example, anything we had seen in the Nonperfect Cell Saga or the Cell Games (compare the animation used in the SSJ2 Gohan vs Cell battle against the one used in the fight between Vegetto and Super Boo). It must be noted, however, that this declining quality in the animation did not begin suddenly with the Boo Saga but rather was a gradual process that "reared its ugly head" throughout various parts of pre-Majin era sagas.
For any of you out there who watch DBGT, you can easily see the similarities in low quality animation between the DBGT series and that used in much of the Majin Boo Saga (of course this only makes sense, since the animators who gradually took over the process made a significant gain in controlling the production of the series right after the Cell Games ended). Common signs of this LQ (low quality) animation are low-detailed beams (like Kamehamehas), deformed 0_0 Makankosappos (Special Beam Cannons) (as was seen when Super Boo fired one at Mystic Gohan) that I think even children could draw, and just blandly colored non-continuous blasts (like the continually pink blasts that Super Boo fires).
The fights can also be observed to be less detailed in terms of animation. Less frames are used and the same boring pattern of kicks and punches dominates any DB-related material produced after the end of the Cell Games. The character looks, in my point of view, get uglier by the minute ever since the Boo Saga started (it may be arguable for characters like Majin Vegeta and Gohan at times, but then again, there was this one scene in the Goku vs Majin Vegeta battle where Goku, while flying towards the sky to avoid Vegeta's blasts, seems to have a severed neck (go figure o_o)). And if you must know, DBGT sports SUCH LQ animation that even I, a rather ardent Dragonball fan, refuse to watch any of it.
One major point of interest is the animation used in the DB Special (aka DBZ Movie 14 aka DB 10th Anniversary Special), which looks just like the styles used in the Boo and DBGT Sagas. And although the general trend for the DBZ character nose has been into a sharper and pointier one, Chibi Goku in the special is seen to have a rather round nose. This was an attempt at making Goku look as close as possible to the original DB Goku, but Toriyama (or whichever fool was doing it for him) could not fulfill the task. As a result, DB fans from the world over were forced to deal with an ugly NOT cute version of Chibi Goku in the special, and later with his look like Goku JR in the DBGT Special (which sucked anyway).
Although the following really does not address the problem of evolving character looks or LQ animation that characterized the Boo Saga on, the DBGT series, along with the DBGT/DB specials, had basically no plot. I think of it personally as a way to make even more money for Toriyama and the producers before they officially end all DB series after running out of good ideas and getting tired of doing HQ animation. Evidence for this thesis can be seen in the growing focus on nudity in the DBGT series (especially with regards to Chibi Goku). The nudity aspect existed and was rather dominant in the original DB series, so it might've been one of Toriyama's methods of saying goodbye to DB fans everywhere by repeating a central theme that had characterized Dragonball when it first began. However, it is needless to say that when nudity is somewhat of a dominant theme, the people behind the production of the series have little things of value to put into the show. Another piece of evidence that illustrates this growing lack of creativity and growing appeal towards a younger (and less intelligent) audience is the use of often nameless monsters (I refer to them as vermin), which are uglily drawn and low-detailed if I might add, in DBGT.
Altogether, the distortion of character faces and physical orientation (example - muscles and hair) and horrid animation characterized the growing dominance of the production of the DBZ series by people whose styles differed from Toriyama's (his original style at least). For this very reason, I think it would have been a wiser choice to render the entire Dragonball thing complete at the end of the Majin Boo Saga instead of creating some crappy (and also short for that matter - only 64 eps) "filler" series like DBGT, which featured even greater distortion of physical features and LQ animation, in addition to a plot that is too childish (at least for me) to be enjoyed by the more mature and older fans of Dragon Ball. |
