Safe

You can hear them beating
through stone and mortar
The drums of war are pounding
This siege has lasted so long

Everything, everyone as the gates
ready to fight
Ready to protect all they have
despite lack of training
But something was found. 

The enemy gathers
they pound, they roar
"FIGHT!"
Nothing.

The walls, after much work
have long since crumbled
The army tore them down
All that was left
was the cold hard ground

They found not one person live
Yet nobody dead
The sun beating down
sweat pouring down in thread

They never knew how
and neither did we
how we'd survive
but the gods were kind
and we were given a way

Safe passage
A hidden passage
Tunnel, impossible to find
We gathered and ran
for days we traveled
then we were safe

New land
New lives
Nothing they could break
So here we are.
