Welcome to the Website of David Nelson.
This site is a work in progress. As time goes by, I will add additional stories of my motorcycling activities.
In the year 2001, I discovered the activity known as Long Distance Motorcycle Endurance Riding. Although I had made many long trips on my motorcycle(s), never had I done it competetively. All that quickly changed. I entered two activities sponsored by Team Strange.
The first rally was the Minnesota 1K. Follow the link to Close Encounters for the complete story.
The second rally was the Buckeye 1K. This was also a 1000 mile in 24 hours event. My performance is a source of embarassment to me. Due to two burned valves (which I found later), my motorcycle did not run very well. The route I chose help lead to my demise, as I tried to get a bonus in Man, WV. It was raining, and the site was in the mountains. Not a good choice at night. I struggled on towards dawn, and while trying to ride Ohio 555, the rain proved too much for my sick engine, and it died. I parked along the road, with only a few inches of shoulder. During a letup in the rain, I tried to move my motorcycle back a few yards to a driveway. Unfortunately, it overbalanced away from me, and wound up upside down in a ditch full of running water. I ended the rally on the back of a tow truck.
Thanks to some Team Strange people, foremost among them Paul Pelland, I was able to get my bike running again, and made it home to Minnesota. My bike has been parked since then while I complete a valve job.
My helmet is off to Adam Wolkoff and Rev. Eddie James, who tirelessly worked to ensure both rallies were fun, challenging, fun, exciting, fun, frustrating, fun, and worth doing again.
2002
My schedule of rallies for 2002 is still being formulated. I have entered two rallies so far, both Team Strange events.
First is the Great Lakes Challenge. The second is the Butt Lite III.
I also plan on entering "2 Wheels to Niobrara", which is sponsored by Team Strange.
The Buckeye 1K this year is sponsored by a new group, the PromiseBreakers.
