Coffee Cake
1 / 2 a pound of butter 1 / 2 a pound of brown sugar 1 / 2 of a pound of golden syrup 1 / 2 a pound of currants 1 / 2 a pound of sultanas 1 1 / 2 pound of flour 1 / 2 an ounce of baking powder 2 eggs 1 / 2 an ounce of nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon, mixed, coffee, a little milk
Sieve the baking powder and spices with the flour into a pan. Add the sugar and butter, rub well together, make a well in the center, pour in the syrup. Add about 1 / 4 of a pint of strong cold coffee. Break in the eggs and beat well together. Mix in the other ingredients with a strong wooden spoon using a little milk if not moist enough.
