| Muster Rolls show these 3 Hartgraves all joined the Confederacy on the same day in Denton, Texas on November 26, 1861. (The typo says 1862) Then this company was incorporated into Capt. Samuel F. Mains' Company, in 1 Regiment Mounted Volunteers, Col. Middleton T. Johnson Commdg, CSA on February 15, 1862 in Dallas, Tx. Hugh and James were brothers. I can only speculate that William was a cousin or other relative. The last name was mis-spelled but corrected on later muster rolls. |
| Hugh and his brother, James, were orphans and came to Texas several years before the War. They worked in the settlements as hired cowboys on ranchs. They rode into Denton together to join the Cavalry on Novenber 26th 1861.. They had very fine horses but as soon as they were in Arkansas the commanders took their horses away and put them afoot. The horses were sent back home to Denton. They both fought long and hard for the Confederacy but were captured and put into prison camps. In 1864 Hugh's little brother ,James, died there. |
