The Kits > Spiderman Vs. Venom

This is the first kit that I built after getting back into this wonderful hobby. I was walking through a comic store and just couldn't pass it up. The sculpt is wonderful, and really shows our favorite webslinger in a dynamic pose. Not to mention that we also get Spidey's #1 villan, Venom!

Materials Used

  • Vallejo Model Air AV057 - Black
  • Testors Enamel 1103 - Red
  • Testors Enamel 1111 - Dark Blue
  • Testors Enamel 1112 - Light Yellow Gloss
  • Testors Enamel 1147 - Black Gloss
  • Testors Enamel 1145 - White Gloss
  • Testors Enamel 1138 - Gray
  • Testors Cement for Plastic
  • Squadron Fast Drying White Putty

The Buildup
As this was my first kit back in quite a while, it took me a bit of time to get things situated. All parts were removed from the sprue and any excess was cut off using an Exacto knife. I built the entire Spiderman first, then went on to the Venom pieces and the base. Spidey himself went together with little trouble, though I did have to putty and sand a couple of seems. [The worst of which was his left leg for some reason.] As I'm finding with many Spidey kits, the modler must pay particular attention when puttying/sanding over the webline design. If you make these go away, you'll have a terrible time when trying to paint him up.

Venom and the base went together with no trouble at all, and I didn't even need to pull out the putty at all.

The Painting
Rather than using my normal Plasticote Sandable Primer [which is gray], I decided to start with a black base. So, I coated the entire kit with Vallejo black. While this is normally used for airbrushing, I find that the Vallejo paints are nice and thin and cover these kits exceptionally well.

I first painted the blue on Spidey with a couple thin coats of dark blue, then did the eyes using gloss black and gloss white. At this point I had a pretty cool looking Spidey build up but without the red. I had decided early on that I didn't want to try and tackle the weblines with a brush, and I didn't really want to draw them on with a paint pen [which I will be using on my next Spidey kit.] So, I basically drybrushed about 10 or 15 layers of red onto the appropriate areas and my weblines were done.

The base was coated with gray and Venom was painted using gloss black. Venom's mouth was probably the most difficult portion of this paint job, as I'd assembled the entire kit before taking a brush to it.

Review
All in all I really enjoyd this kit. Looking back, I made a ton of mistakes, but it's still one of my favorite kits. I just got a new Spiderman kit in the mail the other day, so I'm really looking forward to building that one up to see what different steps I'm going to take.
