Day At The Dyno
Chassis dyno results
Well, I finally dyno tested my '71 Chevelle today (1-12-02). As shown in the graph peak rear wheel horsepower was 258 @ 4900 and peak torque was 326.1 @ 3250. I'm a little surprised on how low the horsepower was, but very shocked that I had that much torque. I was only able to rev to 5800 RPM due to wheel speed being too high for the dyno. Well that and the fact that my tires barely had tread touching the rollers. You see, my tires are only speed rated to 119 but I was going 160 when the dyno brake came on!!!! Needless to say, I took top speed honors :). They didn't want me to run again because of the tire situation. That was on my second run. I was satisfied. No tuning was done between the runs. I think I could have gotten a few more ponies if I played with the timing. All in all I'm happy with the results considering the numbers are SAE net at the rear wheels. So I guess SAE net at the flywheel would be around 310hp and gross would be about 370 hp. SAE torque would be about 390 flywheel and 469 gross. That seems a little high so if anyone wants to correct me, please do. I don't want to be making false claims. I did this as part of the Region of Doom Impala SS club. I didn't get any pictures, but there were a lot of people taking pics so hopefully there is one of mine that I can post here. I gotta tell you, a lot of the guys were pretty stoked when I popped my hood to show what I had. They couldn't believe how clean it was. There were some ricers there and they were giving me thumbs up and all kinds of compliments. Then when I layed down my numbers they let out a howl, especially that 160 mph number. I was the only one with anything older than '94. It felt real good to be up on that dyno in my Chevelle with all those people watching. They said it sounded sweet.....
