| Chevening Amblers-talkSPORT XI v The World-Famous Bunbury's Sunday 28th August 2005 | Bunbury's Day 2004 Once again, Chevening Amblers joined up with talkSPORT radio to pit their wits against the world-famous Bunbury team, which this year included Kent and England's Rob Key, whose 221 against the West Indies at Lord's many will remember, Kent captain Dave Fulton, Matthew Walker (also of Kent), England U17 captain Stuart Meakes, Premiership referee Steve Bennett and many other celebrities. Umpires included ex-England opener Chris Tavare who also umpired in last year's match. The weather was perfect and the crowds flooded in to see the Bunbury team bat first, and they got off to a flyer with Rob Key and Dave Fulton opening the batting. They had scored 283 together against Middlesex a few days before, but couldn't quite manage that against us (those county bowlers are nothing compared to Chevening's best) as Rob Key was caught after a short cameo (admittedly, caught by one of our 15 men on the boundary who were urged on by our 12 slips and three gullies). The batting performance of the day came from England U17 captain Stuart Meakes, who scored a powerful 92 in quick time (despite apparently being a bowler by trade). The Bunbury team went on to post a formidable score of 262 all out from their 35 overs. The Chevening-talkSPORT team were always going to struggle chasing a total like that, even with ex-Kent & England captain Chris Cowdrey (and sons) on the side, but the fact they had 25 batsmen was always going to help. The deal was "25 and out" to give as many people a chance to bat as possible, and top-scorers were Chevening players David Franklin, who scored a rapid 24 before being "retired caught" and Simon Smithers, who made 22. The Chevening innings eventually closed somewhere around the 150 mark. The result wasn't the most important thing, though, on a day when over 3000 was raised for charity. A third of the profits will go to fund the new club pavilion, with the remainder split between youth cricket and the Kent Air Ambulance. Everyone who turned up had a great day, and to cap it all off, the second most important match of the day resulted in a win for England against Australia at Trent Bridge to put them 2-1 up in the Ashes series. |
