The Gates of Time

There once was a knight who pondered the great river of time. Why was it not possible, he wondered, to swing round and walk against this great river? He determined to learn this skill and, after years of fashioning his will into the temper of a brilliant sword, he succeeded. In the moments before that first victory, two knights appeared in a glade, one walking forward, the other backward. They were of exact likeness of each other and of himself. He saw them without surprise, however, resolute and sure now that the moment was at hand. What did he see as he swung against the great river of time, as he walked against that immortal current, as he turned again to complete his wondrous feat?
