October 2003 - The momentus month where I began the Chess Master Nayph challenge. Amidst growing stress of looming exams and the pressures of Summer Projects building, chess became my big escape - Let's see what went down ...

Date - 31/10/2003 Time - 1:23p.m. Description - I'm on a little break between law summaries and I thought I deserved a bit of a reward, so I'm watching Judge Judy and playing some chess. I played very well in this game. Often when I am playing timed games I fall into the trap of thinking I have to move really quickly, and then I make a stupid move that costs me the game. In this game I just took my time, and at first I had far less clock than he did, but I played much better, and eventually I was in such a good position that I was able to wear his time down with a series of good moves. Amen. Rank - 238 450
Date - 17/10/2003 Time - 12:23a.m. Description - One of the first games of my intense chess master training, and I stunk! Since I made the conscious decision to put in a real effort to train to become a chess master, I decided it was time to start playing people with real ratings and be willing to lose, rather than keep searching for easy targets just to get my rating up. So I found this guy with a 1550 rating, and I got my butt whipped. 13 moves and I was gone. My opener that I like to work with was destroyed, which tells me that I have a long way to go - But no one ever said the road to becoming a chess master would be easy. Perhaps it is good that my journey had such a humble beginning ...
Date - 17/10/2003 Time - 12:44a.m. Description - Well after the beating that I just endured, I figured that there was no time like the present to try and redeem myself. This next game I played was against a provisional player, which is not that good because normally they're a bit easy - But I'll take every game as they come at Yahoo chess because sometimes it takes forever for someone to accept a game. Well this game was a bit disappointing. I beat the guy pretty easily - He gave up - Which doesn't help me because I didn't learn anything new. Oh well ... ya live ya learn ... back to the kitchen.
Date - 18/10/2003 Time - 12:40a.m. Description - Today was spent productively down at Waterloo skate park where I was priviliged enough to be able to watch some quality skateboarding, while at the same time getting really sunburned - Talk about two birds! While Todd was getting rorted in his U14 competition, Chima absolutely ripped it up! He put on a great show, taking out both the U18 sponsored comp and the Open sponsored comp. After the comp I spent some further quality time with Hannah, kicking back with some argument free dinner and tv. Not a single second was spent doing uni work, and I feel fine. This tells me one very important thing - Uni sucks and I have finally realised it, and chess rules and Chess Master Nayph is where it's at. Thus to conclude such a productive day, rather than trying to frantically catch up on the long lost hours of uni work, I headed straight for the Chess Master Nayph training area a.k.a Yahoo chess ... Well, another game, another humbling defeat. But on the plus side, I think I did learn form this game. I played a good game against someone with a much higher rating than mine. Basically it was equal for ages until in the last stages of the game, when I made a mistake and he got an extra queen. If not for that little mistake, I could have won. At least in future games I will be on the lookout for such mistakes ...
Date - 19/10/2003 Time - 11:16a.m. Description - Well after I woke up and had my daily quiet time, I booted up the computer ready to get some uni work done. Hannah happened to be online so I had a little chat to her, and then I figured a nice little game of chess might be a good way to get the blood flowing through the brain. Today I played the perfect game!!! My opponent was tough, but I was tougher, which is very promising. Every move I made was well thought out, and I didn't even rely on my usual opener which is a good sign that I'm becoming more flexible. Now that I am nice and happy, I shall go to the statistics work ...
Date - 23/10/2003 Time - 10:54p.m. Description - Well I have been really busy lately trying to raise support for Summer Projects, so I haven't had much time to do any Chess Master Nayph training. Today on the way home from uni, Steven and I were talking about arranging a joint ASSOC/Student Life chess competition - Both ASSOC and Student Life have some very talented chess players, so the competition would be of very high quality. All that talking of chess had got me thinking about my recent lack of skill, so I figured I had better get some games in. After a whole lot of defeats, I decided I was no longer worthy of the intermediate room - Thus I lowered myself to the beginners room. In the end I finally managed a win. I really need to get better if I am ever going to get through the ranks and win my way to become Chess Master Nayph. I think this ASSOC/Student Life competition will give me some good experience, because everyone knows it is a lot harder to play well under the pressure of competition ...
Date - 26/10/2003 Time - 3:13p.m. Description - I'm currently on a break from uni work, and what better way to relax than to get into some intense Chess Master Nayph training. This game was fairly all right. Nothing special happened, but I am happy because I played my normal game against a very good opponent, and I maintained control of the whole game, playing a good attacking strategy, and not giving this guy and leeway - That is the kind of chess that I like to play ...
Date - 26/10/2003 Time - 12:12a.m. Description - I have begun to notice that whenever I tell people that my career goal is to become a chess master, people laugh at me ... I wonder why that is. Anyway, I got home form church tonight, finished my stat work and prepared the Bible study that I'm leading tomorrow. After that I did a little maintainance on the website, and I figured I might as well have a quick game of chess before bed. By this time I was extremely tired, but somehow I played an excellent game - Basically I whooped this guys ass lol ... It's funny how sometimes I'll be on huge losing streaks, and then out of no where I get back on to winning streaks - In theory it is probably because I learn form all the losses ... I can only hope that is how it is happening in reality ...
Date - 27/10/2003 Time - 2:24a.m. Description - Well I had a coffee at about 11p.m. tonight because I wanted to stay up and finish my law readings, but then I ended up going to Hannahs house to hang out for alittle midnight run (It had been so long since we had done one of those). When I got home I knew I wouldn't be able to get to sleep because of the coffee, so I figured I might as well make use of my time awake rather than just lie in bed and do nothing. I turned on the computer and got into the Chess Master Nayph training. It was quite productive ... I played this guy with a one minute time limit to work on my speed, and I beat him. He kept re-challenging me, and I kept beating him. It was good because I tried a few new openers and I still kept winning which shows a bit of progression in my game. ANYWAY, I beat this guy so many times that I managed to get my rating up to over 1400! ... I think it is time to leave the beginner rooms lol.
Date - 28/10/2003 Time - 5:28p.m. Description - Well I wanted to play a quick game of chess at Yahoo as a break between my law readings, but Yahoo was down! I ventured off to msn to find out that it had been given a whole new makeover, and I liked it! I think I am going to play at msn for a while, just for a nice change ... Plus I like how you can get all these statistics on yourself ... Rank - 173 576
