The American Chess School is now offering voluntary certification for chess coaches at the club level. The purpose of the standards is to encourage the professional development of chess coaches.

To qualify as a certified chess coach at the club level, you must successfully complete items 2 and 3.  You must also meet either the Experience (#1) or the Performance (#4) requirements listed below.  Certification is good for five years. 

 

1. Experience:

Completed within the last three years: ONE YEAR of volunteer or paid education work with youth.  Examples might include PTA classroom volunteer work, service as a scout leader, a teacher's aide job, teacher, or chess coaching.  This requirement may be met by having an official mail a letter to the American Chess School at 140 School Street, Bradford, PA 16701 or simply have that individual email us at [email protected].

 

2. Education:

Read the Guide to Scholastic Chess and complete the online test (Club Level Coach Certification) .  You must score at least 80% to qualify.  Go to http://www.uschess.org/scholastic/sc-guide2.doc to read the Guide to Scholastic Chess online, or contact the U.S. Chess Federation for a free copy.

 

3. Chess (rules):

Pass the Chess (Basic Skills) test online with 80% or higher score.

 

4. Chess (performance):

Have a minimum established USCF rating of 1000.  Please submit your USCF ID number for verification.

 

To receive your official certificate, send the $10 fee to the American Chess School at 140 School Street, Bradford, PA 16701.
