ARTIST STATEMENT
Back to Welcome
They say on judgement day God is going to ask,"What did you do with the talents
that I entrusted you with?" As for me it has been an uphill climb. There
always seems to be something that interferes with doing art. A friend once wisely
said that the excuse of no time to paint is not valid, you have to make time.
So the journey continues.
I sketch often. Some people would call it doodling,
but this is where alot of my ideas come from. The idea is developed into a drawing,
then a detailed color version and then finally, a painting.
Here is an example of the progression that I described:
Dove sketch...
Dove print...
Dove painting...
I tend to keep my color pallet simple. I create an underpainting in black and
shades of grey, which becomes the basic structure for the painting. I add color
in layers from dark to light with special brush techniques developed over time,
which I like to refer to as chesneyizing.
I try to establish a sense of serenity and simplicity with my designs. I aim
for designs that are striking enough to draw you in, but once in, to offer the
eye a peaceful unified environment to explore. A restful place in a sometimes
too crazy world.
