OIL PAINT GLAZING
At this point I have tried only basic techniques as I have determined based on past experience only. They are of course Chesneyized as a priority and have proven to be quite satisfactory. I have been starting out as usual for me with a black underpainting complete with shading and blending. This stage normally would have been covered for the most part with opaque color with only the black boundary lines showing through in the final painting.
The drawings, colors and designs have been painstakingly worked out beforehand in a series of preliminary sketches. Perhaps in the future Ill try a more spontaneous and direct painting method where more of the drawing and design work will be done directly on the canvas. The shading is applied with various techniques (whatever works) including scumbling and feathering and that darned scrubbing technique that ruins my brushes so quickly. Someday well get into my brush obsession in more detail. I actually have been using a number of other blending techniques, but I do not feel obligated to list them all here. I dont want to reveal all of my secrets. Not that I am afraid that anyone will try to copy my style. I feel that in order to do that the individual would have had to gone through all the experiences in life that I have in order to think and act in the same way as I do, and I would not wish that on anyone at this time. Besides that, the person in doing so would be entering into the realm of the borderline creepy, similar to the activities of a stalker when following his reluctant victim. So if you still are resolved to copy my techniques or style go right ahead because I dont think that you will meet with success.
I have taken a couple of books out from the library on painting techniques. I have only just recently stumbled upon this glazing technique but have really enjoyed the process and the results. At this point my experience with glazing is very limited and I want to learn more about it. Time will tell if this glazing thing is only a passing fancy or if it will become a major influence in my future work. I somehow think that it will and in my head* am picturing how to use it in a multitude of different ways. I do plan to pursue it further.
So far I havent combined glazing and opaque color on a picture. I consider it not only a possibility, but perhaps an unavoidable necessity. Once again, time will tell.
I have applied the glaze one color at a time letting each layer completely dry before adding another layer. I have feathered the edges of the glaze to avoid a hard line. I layer the glazes until the desired tone is achieved. A thought: Layer two different colored glazes on top of each other to form a third color as in blue over red to make purple. Another thought: Using another color besides black as the underpainting.
* I have only recently learned the meaning of living in my head. In my head I can do all things. Living in ones head is not a good thing.
