Supreme Court of the United States

Is there a Jewish seat? A Black seat? A woman's seat?
Do I know how to do tables? (No, but I used the task of tabulating this data to learn more about writing an ATL/COM/C++ back-end, VB front-end, that deals with native WinNT wide characters and writes text files. We'll see what effect this has on my career.)
Do I have a more recent copy of Black's? (No.)

I used the data from the Time Chart of the United States Supreme Court, from Black's Law Dictionary, 5th ed. West, St. Paul, 1979), which came from Chase and Ducat, Constitutional Interpretation, 2nd ed. (West, St. Paul, 1979) to construct this table. Those sources also list the party affiliations of the Justices.

For data since 1975, I used the Oyez Project formerly at Northwestern University. That site has portraits and biographical sketches for all these justices, and predecessors and successors in seats. That site asks in its terms of service that no deep links be made to it, so the links for the current justices are to their biographical sketches on the Cornell University Law School Supreme Court site.

On the other hand, I don't believe that there is any right to reserve to prohibit making deep links, so, just to tweak them, if you want to read their terms of service, go to http://oyez.nwu.edu/other/legal.html. Note that even though I operate a web site and wish to link to The OYEZ Project, I am ignoring their demand that I "link to the Project home page or Project text pages." by suggesting that people who want to see a portrait of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., ought to issue http://oyez.nwu.edu/support/justices/portraits/Holmes.gif to their browsers. So sue me.

Both lists consulted are only chronological (except for some footnotes in Black's) -- the succession of seats is my judgement, and I am no scholar. In particular, Oyez says I am wrong as to whom Bradley and Strong succeeded in 1870.
