Updates

February 22, 1997

Mother and baby are doing fine, Dad and big sister Lauren are waiting for them to come home on Monday.

Saturday night, 3/1/97, 1 week old

Jack came home as scheduled. A baby and a toddler can keep two parents occupied 24 hours per day. As of Saturday night, this is the first time I've been able to log on.

I think knowing now what we do, a single baby would be a lot easier. Diane and I are a lot more confident and comfortable, and we're splitting the nights well. This time I'm not fighting it, and if he's fussy he gets to sleep on my stomach in the recliner, and I get to sleep sitting up, instead of having to keep getting out of bed. We want him to get used to sleeping by himself, but this is easier all around. Oh well.

Lauren keeps saying "Baby" (at almost 20 months, this is one of her better English words) and she's pretty good at making "Nice baby". She's not so good at letting him sleep in his bassinet. I've taken advantage of the nice weather and my "paternity leave" (that is, a vacation where I don't get to go away) to spend extra time with her. She's forgiven Diane for going away.

As I'm typing Jack is in my elbows and on my forearms. This works OK if he's feeling good (9 pounds is a lot lighter than his sister's 26+, and he moves a lot less) but he's a little crampy tonight. I thought I might try a Snugli, but he didn't like that.

3/7/97

Two-week checkup today. All is well. He's still at his birth-weight (or has regained it.) Officially he's now at 22 inches, but I suspect that his actual growth is less.

The last few nights he's slept well for several hours in a rocking, vibrating seat, while I've watched and logged on. I wish I knew when he was going to sleep for the next four hours, so I could go to bed. Lack of sleep hurts, but getting out of bed is more painful than staying out of bed.

3/10/97

I went back to work today, half-time, leaving both children to the able care of their mother and their grandmother.

Baby-care is still time-consuming enough that between two adults we don't have time for much else, but with care we'll both be able to get full night's sleep, with at least 50% in a bed.

4/17/97

He's progressing like the fine almost-two-month-old he is. That was definitely a big grin -- but he doesn't do it all the time. A little cooing. He likes Big Band music (if I dance with him) especially the Moonlight Serenade.

Most nights he reliably sleeps from 9pm to 1am and 2am to 5am now -- we'll survive!

6/2/97

One hundred days old today!

Lots of smiling and cooing these days. Twice in a row last week he slept through the night (9pm until past 5am.) He can pick up his head a little, and breakdance in his crib, and grab a few things and bat at toys.

7/8/97

Last week he learned to roll over onto his stomach, and today he can almost roll back onto his back. Teething.

8/22/97

Half a year old today!
Last week he started crawling, now he doesn't want to be held. Starting to vocalize. Still no teeth.

10/22/97

Eight months old. At his six-month checkup, the pediatrician said to start solid foods, and he's been going after them with a passion! Only two bottom teeth, but he eats whatever he can get his hands on. He can almost feed himself with a spoon.

He's cruising, and trying to stand up. He was starting to sleep through the night, but what with teething and a cold, we've had setbacks. He loves to take a bath -- whenever he hears the water, or sees anybody in the bathroom, he comes trotting in.

11/5/97

Babbles, drums, fishes in the toilet :-(, and from time free-stands. After a few weeks sleeping in Dad's arms in the recliner, he's on the family futon. (Lauren moved up to the big bed, with Mom on one side, a bumper on the other.) At least we all get to sleep, and horizontally, through the night. So much for cribs.

12/12/97

Has started to take a few steps in the last week.

2/10/98

First English word: "Hat"

Very good at walking, climbing on and off chairs, and can sometimes get under the gate and climb up the steps -- but not down.

2/22/98

Happy Birthday!

2/26/98

Greeted me with "Da Da Da Da Da". Says that to everything else, too.

3/1/98

First Birthday Party! (Postponed a week due to a cold.)

Guests include all living grandparents, uncles, aunt, and first cousin; and various family friends.

8/19/98

Starting to talk for real. Nods for "Yes", shakes his head for "No", says "Babba" for bottle, "Bubba" for bubbles, and "PatPat" for pattycake. Maybe "Cat" too.

He enjoys swimming pools this summer. Has fun when I carry him around a big pool, enjoyed running into the wading pool. He can blow bubbles too.

Jack and Lauren have enjoyed our backyard kiddie pool this summer too. He's still eating everything he can.

11/19/98

More words, making requests.

Welcome little brother Kevin Joseph

1/28/99

Ever since Kevin was born, Jack is no longer a big baby; he's a very little boy.

Still doesn't say very much, just two to five word sentences. Likes his little brother, sledding, trying to get out the front door, fire trucks.
