Deities
Deities...as I became more familiar with the ways of Wicca/the
Craft or whatever you wish to call it I wondered about all the
Gods and Goddesses...and how they fit in this wonderful new
discovery I had stumbled upon...so I began researching my books
I had bought...here is kind of a summation of my favorite authors...
Religions are structures built upon the reverence of Deity.
Wicca is no exception. The Wicca acknowledge a supreme divine power,
unknowable ultimate, from which the entire universe sprang. In
accordance with the principles of nature, the supreme power was
personified into two basic beings: The Goddess and the God. Every
Goddess is resident within the concept of the Goddess; every God in
the God.
Wicca reveres these twin deities because of its links with nature.
Since most (but not all) nature is divided into gender, the deities
embodying it are similarly conceived.
This higher power...this 'Ultimate Deity'...is some genderless force
which is so far beyond our comprehension that we can have only the
vaguest understanding of its being. Yet we know that it is there and,
frequently, we wish to communicate with it. As individuals, we wish to
thank it for what we have and to ask it for what we need. How do we do
this with such an incomprehensible power?
So we have this idea of an Ultimate Deity, an incomprehensible power,
and in trying to relate to it we have split it into two main entities,
a female and a male. To these we have given names.
So in WitchCraft; those we know as the Goddess and the God are our
intermediaries. Different traditions use different names. These are
the names used for the understandable forms of the Supreme Power; the
Ultimate Deity. They are the deities honored and worshipped in the
rites performed in Witchcraft.
Witchcraft is a religion of nature, as most any witch will tell you.
Everywhere in nature there is a male and female, and both are necessary.
It follows, then, that both the Goddess and the God are important and
should be equally revered. There should be balance.
We are all made up of both male and female attibutes. So it is with
the deities. The God has feminine aspects as well as masculine, and the
Goddess has masculine as well as feminine.
What names you use for your deities is a matter of personal preference.
In Saxon Witchcraft the name Woden is given to the God; in Gardnerian the
latin term Cernunnos is used; in Scottish, Dev'la. Each tradition has its
own name. But names are only labels used for identication. You should use
a name with which you can feel completely comfortable. The Goddess/God
themself knows who you are 'talking' with and they won't be confused!
Traditionally the 'dark half' of the year is associated with the God.
But this does not mean that he is 'dead', or incommunicado, in the 'light
half' of the year (and vice versa with the Goddess). During the light half
he is fully active in his feminine aspect; just as the Goddess is active in
the dark half in her masculine aspect. So, both deities are active throughout
the year, even though deference may be given to one over the other ar certain
times.
So with all this information I still needed more...I didn't and still don't
belong to a coven, I practice solitary. For me the need for that label was
important...however I came by mine through meditation...what follows in these
links are deity associations...may your journey enlighten others...
