I am intrigued by the alarmingly elusive nature of memory and by our instinct to try to make sense of, and to categorise, what is going on inside our heads and in the world around us. This instinct is so strong that we find ourselves looking at clouds, damp patches on walls or inkblots, trying to find some familiar shape - an animal, a castle or a face perhaps. Memory and understanding drift in and out of focus, while we struggle to claim what is just out of reach.
I work with Photoshop, using text, drawings and photographs, to generate images, which I transfer onto canvas (using archival inks). I then work into the resulting chaos with mixed media and traditional painting techniques, looking for recognisable, accidental shapes, until parts come into focus and begin to make sense. Each image is therefore a one-off, combining the traditional with the technological.
