Corn Maiden
This story is about the first Man and the Corn Maiden. you know the Great One made four men before he made the Cherokee, he put them here in the mountains. he gave the man all the world he could reach.the Great One told the man about the animals and about how he might use them when he needed them. he would use the Deer for food and clothing Bow strings and thread to sew his clothes.part of the animal would be used for Medicine and one of the bones would be used to shape arrowheads. the Deer Tribe understood that they were to share some of their members with him.
the Great one diden`t say anything about sport hunting or fishing just for fun, but he did give him bows and arrows, and showed him how to use them. he also put a brain in mans head but the man just sort of wondered around, went here and yonder not doing much of anything. at first he killed only the Deer he needed to live , but after awhile he started taking potshots at the deer and the other animals.
maybe he was lonely. finally so many of the animals were being killed uselessly that they thought they had better do something about it. so one day the deer the A-wi called on the great one up in ga-lun-la-ti. they said, look here, we thought man was decent, that the world would be better because of him. you gave him a brain we thought he would use it. we hoped he would do something worthwhile, build a home, work, learn how to do things. well he hasen`t. just look at him lying over their on the ground asleep in the sunshine with his face turned to the sky. the dumbest animal has more sence than that. when a animal wants to sleep he finds a sheltered place under a tree root, in a cave, in some brush, even on the underside of a leaf. for all his brain that man dosen`t have the sence of the dumbest animal.
the Great One was suprised. he looked at the man and thought, well they have a point, that is a sorry looking fellow, I have to do something to help him. I wonder what? he pondered for awhile oh I know whats the matter with him, he said, he is lonesome. I have to send him a Companion. you deer and other animals just stand back. I`ll take care of this right away. so from the heart of the man lying their, the great one made a plant grow straight up towards the sky. graceful green blades grew up on the sides of the plants and bent over so prettily. where the blades grew up from the stalks, ears with grain developed the most Beautiful Creature you could ever imagine. the man thought he was dreaming. he looked up at her and said, oh isn`t she pretty! I would love to have her for my companion.
I wish I were awake and this were true. I would take her and love her. I would work so hard, build a home for us. I could be somebody.
I could be a worthwhile person.
as soon as he wished that , the Great Spirt made him realise that he wasen`t dreaming at all. that was the companion the Great Spirit had created for him.
she was his.  so he crawled out from under that stalk of corn and helped this beautiful one down using the most delightful manners. you can`t imange the good manners he used, and no one had taught him.he clamed her for his own and together they went away to make a home. before they left, the firat Woman wanted to take some of the corn with her to remind her of her hertiage. so she pulled two ears from the stalk. it was se-lu, the first corn. you might think them made some cornbread taht night but they diden`t because she dident know the corn was good to eat. she thought the corn was just something pretty so she planted some out in front of the house. like roses. every year for several years it grew up and she enjoyed looking at it and was satisfied. one mourning she looked out into the yard and would you believe it, their was a bird eating some of the nice jucy seeds of corn. it was a big bird gun-na the wild turkey sacred bird for things on earth. she knew if gun-na eat it people could to now it was the time of the year that the corn was green, in the milk stage so that nite for supper she picked and cooked the first roasting ears ever served.
