I carved your name upon the tree
I watched you carve mine
But life is what it's meant to be
And someday I'll be fine

The tree grew bigger, thicker, strong
Sun shined and rain fell
I never dreamed that trunk was wrong
You were here and all was well

But cracks appeared in the names of ours
Old and withered, now our tree
Although surrounded with spring flowers
I had to look too hard to read

Yet I found comfort in the writings
Whispered secrets in the bark
Found old feelings so exciting
Opening this cobwebbed heart

Now in my mind the sweetest memory
One not so far left behind
I carved your name upon a tree
And I watched you carve mine

My love for you is a journey;
Starting at forever,
And ending at never.
